I have to imagine the Canes decline, Necas put up the most points on the team this year and they don't need another bottom six winger/3LD, both of which they can get in free agency without losing Necas.

Carolina wouldn't trade Necas for just about anybody probably, especially not that haul, Pacioretty would cost at least 4 mil, probably more, and trading away Guentzel would probably be unwise since I'm pretty sure he has the most goals of any Pen over the last 4 seasons or something like that. Would be crazy if they made all these moves though, and Guentzel would make sense for the Avalanche if Landeskog really is done.

I've seen a version of this Avalanche trade before. Guentzel is a nice player, but he was #50 in scoring last year WITH Sidney Crosby as his primary center. Legit top 10 D-men are a primary reason you WIN a cup. Complementary LW's a reason you COMPETE for a cup. There is no world where the Avalanche give up a legit top 10 D-man, their Star D-man's preferred partner, and #1 penalty killing D-man for a one year rental at a position they can fill with FAs for a lower cost. Some team might trick themselves into thinking he can help them win a cup, but the Avs are a legit contender next year, and they are not going to deprecate the team by taking away one of their core players, even if they lose him for nothing the following year.
