What I would do if I was GMCM

Description
This is how I would look at constructing the roster if I was GMCM/Sakic. Thoughts on each move and how the roster could work heading into 24-25.

Byram: Would like to lock him up long term but not really any good comps for a guy that has missed as much time. Still too early IMO to give him more than a bridge deal.
Newhook: Bringing him back on a bridge deal with a solidified role to prove what he is. Addition of ROR allows him to slot in as 3C and ideally grow into the 2C role by the end of ROR's contract.
Meyers: View him similar to LOC and would like to see him get the LOC contract. Underlying numbers show potential for increased offense and would like to see him get an extended look on the 3rd line to prove that he has more offensive potential than LOC. This contract would be a steal if he does improve his finishing. Otherwise its a good contract for bottom 6 depth over the next few years.
Malgin: 1 year prove it deal to show last years 20 goal pace wasn't a fluke.
Merkley: 1 year deal to compete with Malinski/Hunt for 6th D spot.
ROR: Best option available to fill the 2C role. Contract from Daily Faceoff.
Drouin: 1 year prove it deal to show he is still a factor for a bigger payday next offseason. Being on a line with MacK and Moose would give him the best opportunity to prove that.
Cogs: 1 year to help fill out the bottom 6. Has been a real heart and soul guy for the Avs. Locker room would love to have him back in a 4th line role.

This approach gives some of our better AHL guys and college free agents a chance for extended looks in the early part of the season. Looking at giving guys a chance to shine in areas that they should fit with the club in the future. Thinking Foudy as a middle 6 wing or 3C. Pavel as a 4C. Malinski as 3rd pair D. But also get looks at Polin/Merkley/Olausson. And as mentioned, give Malgin a chance to show the 20 goal pace wasn't a fluke. At the trade deadline, we either have some room to add rentals to replace any of the spots that haven't been adequately filled by one of the young guys.

Heading into 24-25, I would extend Toews if he is willing to take 6yr x $7mil or less. Otherwise we just keep him as our own rental to make a run this season. At a cap hit of $7 or less, this roster leaves room to bring Landy back and bring Kovalenko over on an ELC while filling out the rest of the roster on 1M contracts.

I dont like the lines but the rest looks good, I would keep Foudy in the middle.

Thanks for the effort put into this post! Im excited for training camps to see what the college f.a's do. I would draw a hard line of 1x1 for Drouin, rest looks good. Wouldn't hate bringing Eller back as a 4c on the cheap

Over Newhook? The last half of the year and playoffs he played mostly center and got praised by Bednar over his play. I wouldn't put JLF on the 4th line, he is still too light for that role. I agree with line swaps, good old Blendnar will take care of that though lol

I would absolutely expect Bednar to blend these guys on nightly basis. If Foudy is on the roster, I want him on one of the middle 2 lines. Meyers would likely get bumped to 4th line, but he is a guy I am high on for a offensive breakout year, so I would like to see him get some time with the 3rd line.

I love all of these thoughts!

Cogs has to be cheaper. would rather pay ZAR if Cogs is asking for that, tbh.

I doubt Pavel is starting the season at 4C, as much as I'd love that. He'll get a call up.

However, I too am hot on Malinski playing at least 30-40 games in the big leagues this year. I'm hoping you and I are right, bc we need a few ELC contracts to outperform imo.

I don't expect Merkley to get there, tbh. I think he's AHL at least for one more year. Just based on some folks' impressions from practices and games. I'd expect him to improve greatly over the next year, though.

There's a lot of cash left on the table here, which i think benefits the Avs if they can contend at least for the first half of the season like they did this year. TDL next season should be interesting. But if there's a better Left winger available from a team that needs to offload cap (hello, Taylor Hall and the Bs), i would jump at it early.

Pavel's game fits a 4C. Good heavy checker that isn't expected to contribute on offense. Really would just want to see what he looks like at the NHL level for 15-20 games before you make a move for a wing that could push Meyers down to that 4C role unless Meyers is rolling offensively.

Cogs could definitely be cheaper, just went with the same contract as last year.

Agree on Merkley. Think he gets a chance in camp to compete with Malinski and Hunt. But he is the least likely of the 3 to win that competition. View it more of Malinski/Hunt with Merkley as depth if there are a lot of injuries on the backend.

JLF has a better shot at being an ahl 1c next season than centering any line with the Avs. I expect we'll see him for longer than 9 games this time. Newhook is an ideal 3C at this point in his development.
Edit: misread your post. JLF as a wing with middle 6 talent would be fun

Yeah, I think JLF should get more than 9 games with the big club this time around. I think he will play C for the Eagles or be a middle 6 wing for the Avs until we figure out what we have with Newhook. Newhook should be our 3C until he shows he is ready for the 2C role or his development leads us to a place where LW is a better spot for him.
