Sharks say yes, not sure if Hertl waives though. He's been pretty vocal about wanting to stay in San Jose.

I wonder if the Sharks would be willing to eat, maybe 1.5mil, on Hertl, at the very least to lessen the risk for the Canes later on in the contract. Or at least to help them out for next year.

Even if they aren’t, I think the Canes should do that. I get that Hertl wants to stay in SJ, but how long will it be until SJ is competitive again? Maybe within the final 2 years of his contract, if they are lucky. I get being loyal to your team, but if Hertl is given the option of staying with the Sharks or getting moved to one of the top contenders, like Carolina, where he could reunite with Burns, I think he might be willing to waive. If he stays with the Sharks, he might never have the opportunity to actually win a cup again.

If Grier retains on Hertl's contract it'd be the last thing he'd do as GM hopefully.
That'd be absolutely awful for the Sharks and just about confirm the Canes have dirt on him or something.

Sharks sending two players to the Canes and retaining. Insanity.

That part was just me wondering out loud. But yeah, I would expect if Hertl gets moved with retention that Grier gets fired. But you can rest assured that the Canes don’t have dirt on Grier, since Meier is not currently a Hurricane.

Idk about you but to me Grier has made it pretty clear that most to all pieces are on the board. If it's an issue about his NMC than that's a whole other discussion but after the Mier and Karlsson situations Hertl being next could be a reality

Idk man his "not so great year" would be second on the canes in points and that total would def go up on like a much better team and system

Yeah that's the biggest issue, Carolina does seem like the type of place a lot of players wanna go, young team, fantastic coach, great system. Wouldn't be shocked if he didnt waive but in this situation I say he does

He'd be 5th in PPG. Svechnikov and Aho both had major injuries and even if you want to ignore the fact Pacioretty scored in every game he didn't leave injured, he'd still be 3rd. Combine that with Kotkaniemi having a great year, there's no need for Hertl. He's signed until his mid 30s, he's arguably shown signs of declining, coming into a system like Carolina that strangles offensive talent is going to hurt production even more... it's an easy pass.

Im not saying it's a slam dunk deal, but remember that Hertl put up his points almost alone. He had Meier for half the year and Karlsson whenever they were on the ice together, but almost 0 scoring support after that. On a team like Carolina (given similar ice time/deployment), I think it's likely he puts up significantly more points.
