Deep Draft Philosophy

Description
Detroit Red Wings' general manager, Steve Yzerman, is making calculated decisions, leveraging the depth of the 2023 draft to bolster the team's future. In a trade with Florida and Montreal, Detroit drops from the 17th to the 29th and 37th picks, gaining an additional second-round pick; while this means losing a mid-first-round pick, the talent pool in this draft makes the later slots potentially just as valuable, providing more opportunities to land impactful players. Similarly, in a trade with Chicago, Detroit moves their high first-round pick (9th overall) for three second-round picks (35th, 44th, and 51st). Although this means moving out of the top 10, the increased number of selections broadens their margin for error and offers more chances to pick talented players. These moves, possibly based on Detroit's confidence in certain overlooked prospects, highlight a strategy of trading quantity for quality, positioning the Red Wings for future success.

Depending who's still available at 17th, MTL might consider

The logic is sound, but not this way. You need a higher initial pick back for 9. The drop off tends to happen after 15 and in a draft this deep, it's around 21. To drop out of the first round from a top 10 pick needs more than 3 selections in my opinion.

I think hughes will be looking to make a trade of that type, especially if they identify a Dach type deal available. Move up to the get the 17th to flip it with a propsect package for someone they really want

Habs would beat that package for the 9th overall.

I think Detroit would look at doing the opposite. Putting our picks together to acquire what should be a higher quality player. We need more high end talent. I honestly just think we make our picks without any drastic swaps.

Detroit has a million prospects with decent chances at the NHL already. They need a star. Going down in the draft order doesn't fix that problem. If they can move into the top ~7 they should prioritize that over getting a million picks in the 25-50 range

Detroit passes on both trades

For a 9th overall pick... CHI should absolutely accept that. Sure we would be giving up a lot, but we'd also almost certainly be adding another key piece to our rebuild, and that is priceless. And I think it makes sense for DET since they have a lot of key pieces already in place and will need to fill out the rest of the roster with affordable role players and add longer term projects to their pipeline to kick things down the road a bit while they put the finishing touches on what should hopefully be a contender soon.

Also, I am hoping CHI can hit their stride while DET is still within their window. A CHI v DET Stanley cup series would be amazing!

I get your point, but this makes zero sense for Detroit. We should do the actual opposite, trade up and get players with the highest potential possible. We don't need more 3rd liners - HIGH END TALENT!

I think this would be a good idea for teams with only few picks in the Draft: Leafs, Jets, Penguins.

So MTL trades FLA 1st and an early 2nd to move up 12 spots.
...but three 2nds gives CHI the 9th overall pick ?

Can we switch deals here ? smile

That Chicago trade is like the laughable trade that Kevin Costner did in the movie Draft Day.

U don’t trade a top 10 pick for a bunch of 2nd rounders. A 1st or multiple 1sts is required to make that sort of jump.
