Funny how 99 point Selke finalists aren’t worth anything around here.
I never said he wasn't worth anything. He just isn't worth that in my opinion. You don't have to sell me on Marner lol. I know what he brings and how good he is. What I'm saying is, why does this make sense for Nashville? It doesn't. Lets trade away a guy who can be a habitual 40 goal scorer who is locked up long term. Let's trade away our goaltender who just so happens to be top 5 in the league on a steal of a contract for the next 2 seasons. In return, let's get back a guy who's biggest weapon would now become Matt Duchene. While a very good player and goal scorer still, he's no Auston Matthews. Marner has 2 years left on his deal and will now become the best forward on that team with not a lot of help offensively. Now lets throw in a guy in Matt Murray who is made of glass and makes nearly as much as Saros does. The 1st round pick is decent sure, but it's hardly the compensation Nashville would be asking for if they WERE to be trading away two pillars of their franchise (newsflash they aren't). So Nashville takes on more salary cap total in the trade. Gets Matt Murray an unreliable goaltender who is basically a cap dump at this juncture. 2 years of Mitch Marner. And the #28 pick in this years draft.
This trade is not fair whatsoever in my opinion. Not only is it not fair, it doesn't make sense for Nashville. Nashville won't be gifting anything or doing anyone any favors. Also Askarov isn't ready. Just throwing a potential franchise goaltender into the ring with 1 game of NHL experience and telling him to "take the job and be our guy right out the gate" is not a recipe for longevity, success, or good asset management.
Bad trade. Just my opinion.
