If you are trading someone it should be Marner not Nylander.

Why trade Nylander for Toffoli? Toffoli would be a nice addition to the team but not at the cost of Nylander.

The Leafs should just stay the course, not the result that they wanted of course but they have had progress nonetheless. So, they need more tinkering. In terms of roster makeup, change is bound to happen with Tavares and Brodie coming off the books. If they are resigned, they are likely to have
lesser roles than their current one. Obviously, contract negotiations/willingness of Matthews and Nylander to resign are going to play a role in whether they should keep the core in tact but trading Nylander just for the sake of change doesn't make sense when he's been their most consistent playoff performer from the 4 especially for a 31 yo on an expiring deal.

If you look at the Leafs homegrown talent, Rielly is entering his 11th year as a regular roster player, and Matthews, Marner and Nylander their 8th, Liljegren his 3rd, Knies and Woll their 1st. When TB won in 2019-20, Hedman was in his 11th, Stamkos in his 8th, Kucherov, Palat and Killorn in their 7th, Point in his 4th, and Vasilevskiy's 4th as a starter.

Maybe, but it hasnt worked and the cap will only get more stretched with the young big 3 hitting UFA status, lack of high end youth, lack of picks, something more major has to happen then the usual bottom 6 tinkering and bargain bucket UFA signings. Yeah, toffoli isnt enough and the 2nd and 4th bring back some draft capitol for a team lacking it, but really its about cap savings, a cheaper albeit lesser replacement to enable the team to stay a contender, and try to win with a deeper team, without free agency of nylander, matthews, marner hanging over their heads.

Too many of the vets are reaching their end and wont get better, and its time for a change, not more of the same. And maybe the defense is weaker, but the forward depth is better and goal is sorted out longer term than usual and not pressed against the cap

Once Tavares' 11m is off the books, even if he is resigned for 5m, the raises for the younger guys will balance out to being something similar as to what it is now. The defence is likely to start being an issue but they probably have 2-year window. Theg probably just need to phase out the Tavares contract really. That being said the difference between the Leafs and the Panthers offense in that series was Verhaeghe (3 goals) +a Nick Cousin goal. So, it's clear they could use a guy like Toffoli who can chip in as the 2/3LW. They should just let Bunting walk since Knies can probably replace his production. It's unfortunate we couldn't see more of Knies in the Florida series.

The Leafs definitely need guys like Robertson, McMann, and Holmberg to be competing for roster spots next year.

Don’t know I think theres a lot of problems:

basically all of the top players, except Reilly are RFAs/UFAs in the next 2 years.

DEFENSE: The only young dmen are lijegren (only played 6 out of 12 playoff games) and timmins (didn’t dress it all) and Schenn, Holl, Gustaffson are UFAs now, with Giordano and Brodie looking just plain old this playoffs and probably not worth resigning next yr and only Niemala probably 2 yrs away doesn’t bode well. Theres little cap to improve here and little commodities to deal for an upgrade. McCabe and Reilly are both abovbe average as a 1LD and 2LD, but wheres the quality behind them?

YOUTH: Holmberg looked serviceable, but Robertson disappointed again and 26 yr old McMann looks void of offensive production, as above, neither liljegren/timmins are looking like a quality top 4, mete/kral/benn/hollowell are looking like never-weres/will-bes, with villenueve/niemala probably 2 yrs or more away. Guys like Steeves, Abueze, Hirvonen might have some capability, but none look like good bets to be quality top 6 guys. Everyone else is probably 3 yrs away or more and with such few high round picks over the next 3 yrs, unrealistic to think that a lot of ELC will enable cap space.

And ultimately, if Keefe is going to play the top 6 24+ minutes a night and the bottom 6 less than 15 (in a longish OT game), than its irrelevant, but it hasn’t worked for a lot of years now.

Ultimately I think/believe they need to find a way to develop a TEAM, not just 2 forward lines and relying on annual imports on defense or for physicality/grit. Matthews and Nylander will easily eat the expiring monies of Brodie and increased cap, without a suitable amount of money to address RFAs or get a top 4 dman replacement for Brodie, so just thinking they’ll find cap space among the status quo or wait til Tavares expires wastes everyones careers. But ultimately if you’re trying to maintain status quo and just hope everyone will be better year after year, or “stay young”, you’re inviting same or lesser results.

Having only Rielly signed long-term is a good thing if they can resign Matthews, Nylander, and Samsonov long-term at a reasonable price. The big thing about the other expiring ufas is being able to bring back some of the key guys from the forwards so that they aren't starting from scratch again. That also goes for Bunting and that top 6 spot.

Robertson is young and the leash he had was very short especial since he was trying to crack the line up to play a top 6 role, this time around it could be the same but maybe he can adapt his play to a style that doesn't get him injured. McMann was looking pretty good at the end of the year in the Marlies if I'm not mistaken. I imagine he or Steeves can be a Bunting replacement. Liljegren and Timmins are still young for defenders, most dmen establish themselves as top 4 guys or solid Dmen between ages 25-32. Liljegren is going to have to take another jump or they will be in trouble on that front. Perhaps they will target a veteran Dman in FA.

This team was drastically different than previous iterations, the only thing that is the same is the core. Now you can break up the core by trading Nylander but that doesn't guarantee anything.

Keefe has done a lot with this group but perhaps the change that could be made is behind the bench. I also think it's time to make a change in leadership, and give Tavares an A or no letter instead of the C.
