Description
Draft:

Given that the Canucks need superstar talent more than anything, they need to avoid the pitfall of drafting based on positional need. With that being said my ideal pick for the Canucks on draft day are as follows:

1. Michkov - longshot, but people have speculated that he could fall outside of the top 10 due to his contract situation in Russia
2. Benson -longshot as well, but his size may be a concern for some teams, enough for him to slide down
3. Moore - fast center who performed well despite not getting top line minutes or pp time like Smith and Leonard
4. David Reinbacher - more of a complimentary piece that can be more than the sum of its parts alongside player like Hughes
5. Danielson - smart two-way game and fast

RFA signings:

Hoglander agrees to a 1 year bridge deal that benefits Hoglander's camp as it allows them to be 1 year closer to free agency, while also potentially setting themselves up for raise if he performs this year. Meanwhile, the Canucks get to keep the AAV for Hoglander's deal low while they manage a cap crunch this year.

Bear similarly agrees to a 1 year bridge deal for many of the same reasons as Hoglander. Bear is positioned well to get a raise as long as he can compliment Hughes at a level comparable to Schenn, Juulsen, etc..

UFA signings:

Accari brings a speed tenacity element that Tocceht has often hinted that the Canucks severely lack. Accari should have many suitors, but I expect offers to fall close to the 2 million range, what the Canucks offer is a 3rd line spot effectively guaranteed given the state of the rest of their bottom 6

Kulikov had a down year last year in Anahiem, but was good in Minnesota the year prior. Essentially he went from one of the best defensive teams to one of the worst. The hope is that his game finds a middle ground once joining the Canucks.

  1. Wilde, Bode [Droits de RFA]
Détails additionnels:
Wilde was once considered a higher end prospect when drafted in the 2nd round in 2018; however, after deciding not to be vaccinated it appears his tenure with the Islanders is basically over. Meanwhile, the Canucks have also struggled to develop an interesting college player who has shown fairly well in the AHL in Rathbone. Effectively this is a low risk role of the dice for both teams, with the Canucks getting the added benefit of getting a right side dman who also happens to be about 6 months younger than Rathbone.
2.
VAN
  1. Armia, Joel
  2. Choix de 6e ronde en 2023 (MTL)
  3. Choix de 2e ronde en 2024 (COL)
Détails additionnels:
The Canucks get a similar return to Bjorkstrand from last year as they take on Joel Armia's contract in exchange. It seems likely that the Canadians will land Dubois sometime in the near future. Boeser fits nicely as a complimentary piece to a Habs forward core that could feature Suzuki Dubois Caufield, Slafkovsky as soon as next year. The Canucks get the added benefit of freeing up nearly 3.2 million, while also adding a pick to replace the one lost from the Dickinson cap dump to Chicago.

Boeser is worth around a late second (although i think hes worth more) and Armia costs around a mid second to dump, so you could get more for him. Also is studnicka on the team or no?

Finally an interesting Boeser deal. Tired of the Boeser for a first bull****. But I don’t think Montreal need Boeser. Value is fair though

Boeser isnt any less of a cap dump than Armia tho. Armia is an easy buyout, Boeser is not. The 2nd round pick is going the wrong way

I'd trade Norlinder for the local kid, Bode Wilde

I'm not so sure if Boeser is worth a late second round pick (especially without any retention/taking back of a bad contract). I think if he was worth that much he would have already been traded. The Bjorkstrand trade is an instructive comparable as both players are wingers with a similar impact overall. Columbus (who was also in a cap bind) moved him for a 3rd and 4th and took no money back; however, Bjorkstrand is also making 1.2 million dollars less than Boeser. If anything I think the Canucks may be able to get a 4th or a 5th instead of a 6th, but this feels like a relatively realistic value for Boeser given the term and caphit associated with his deal.

...and I would argue that the Habs could get a good return on Armia if they retained $1.4m, bringing him down to a $2.0m AAV.

Boeser isnt worth close to a 2nd making 7M AAV for a 18 goal scorer with bad skating and term that guy is delusional

While, I agree that both players can be viewed as cap dumps to an extent, I'm not sure if value wise the Canucks would be adding a pick. For starters the buyout cost for Armia would be roughly 1.43 million over 4 years, compared to Boeser who would be roughly 2.21 million over 4 years. The difference in terms of buyout cost is only about 800k.

Production wise, Armia had 14 points in 43 games played (this is about 28 points over 82 games). Meanwhile, Boeser had 55 points in 74 games (this is about 60 points per 82). In addition, Boeser has a points per 60 of about 0.78, while Armia has a points per 60 of about 0.35 over their careers thus far. Finally, Armia is also an older player (3 years older) and far more likely to have his production taper off further compared to Boeser.

Essentially, I think Boeser has far more utility, and frankly upside, than Armia at this point in time.

Personally, can't see any team offering much of anything for Armia even 2 million. Especially when players like Accari, Blueger, Namesnikov, etc.. could all be signed for cheaper and probably give you about the same/more production.

Armia, at $2.0m, can get you at least a 3rd. Low maintenance veteran, defensively responsible, good on the PK, solid along the boards, can produce in sequence...these are the players GM overpay for at the deadline.

Although, I agree that Boeser is not worth his current contract (6.650 million, NOT 7 million), it is important to keep in mind various points of context. For starters, Boeser had the lowest avg time on ice of his career this season and was nearly a full minute lower than his career average. Additionally, Boeser's shooting percentage was down nearly 2% from his career average. However, the biggest impact is likely on the powerplay, where Kuzmenko has moved him off the top unit. Boeser's power play time on ice to finish the season was roughly 2.52 per game, down from 3.05 last season and 3.39 the year before.

Essentially, this is all to say that Boeser still managed 55 points in a career low year in a number of offensive categories. While nothing is guaranteed, it would not be surprising in the least if Boeser posted better numbers next year.

For the sake of comparison, Armia avg ice time this season was higher than his career norm (14.57 this season, 14.30 career). His shooting percentage was higher than his career norm (10.1 this season, 9.1 career). Finally, both his power play time on ice and short handed time on ice were up from last year (0.48 pp and 1.25 shorthanded). In this instance, its probably fair to say if any of these regress to career norms/below career norms your probably looking at a hit in overall production (which was already only 14 points in 43 games)

I agree. i simply like to aggravate canucks fans that think Boeser is worth a 1st while Armia needs multiple 1sts to dump. If they are going to be extreme, it's fair game if i exaggerate a tiny bit which still way more reasonable than saying a 7M dollar player they cant afford and doesnt produce is a wortwhile option for another team. I dont see a single team that wants Boeser. Even Mtl, they have Farrell, Ylonen, Heineman, Roy, Mesar, Beck that they want to get games this season. Boeser isnt an option for a rebuilding team. Also, he isnt an option for a contending team that needs to count every dollar. He's simply a luxury that no team wants! The definition of a cap dump is an asset not in demand and Boeser has been available forever with nobody wanting the player at that cap hit, same as Beauvilier.

Nobody overpays for a player like Boeser. A known floater, goal scorer that cant score goals or drive play. Armia is more of a niche player at a fraction of the cost. Neither player will be easy to move but Boeser is simply impossible to move without retention
