This is a good draft. Yes, Murray's hurt all the time. Yes, you'd need another option (Hellberg, or any third stringer would suffice). Half of his salary could be retained by a third party if necessary, but this does solve issues. Detroit has no goaltending. Getting paid a 1st in a deep draft, for a 2.3M for a goalie who, when healthy, is better than Husso, is a pretty decent deal. The 13 spots are worth it. If I was a Wings fan, I'd say yes. As a Caps fan, if Lindgren wasn't in the picture, I'd say yes.
Again, there is precedent for this with Mrazek. This deal is miles better for Detroit than the Mrazek trade was for Chicago.
Ellis is a minor leaguer. He was thrown in as a small sweetener, primarily because he's from Detroit and it'd be a childhood dream of his to get the opportunity. I don't understand the big deal.
Retaining half then yeah maybe; but certainly not the full 4.6M. We need a goalie, and yes Murray would be a fine back up, but we'd still expect him to play at least 25 games. I understand that isn't a guarantee with any goalie, but it certainly is less likely for him.
It depends greatly on whose available at that time. If the draft goes as expected (which rarely does but what can you do), the wingers or RDs in that area are no better than the ones at 41. This draft is deep, but there are noticeable tiers. 1-5, 5-14, 15-25, and so on.
I have no quarrel with Ellis, and I love a hometown reunion, but he's a replaceable player.
