Description
Yes, the core is old, but they were producing at a rate that they should have made the playoffs.
Forget the Blackhawks and Blue Jackets loss at the end of the season, there were tons of games they should have won that they should not have even be in the position.
October 17th at Montreal: They blew a 2-0 lead in the third period and lose in OT.
October 28th at Vancouver: They lost to ****ing Spencer Martin. Vancouver was also on a second half of a back to back.
November 1st vs Boston: They blew a 5-2 lead and lost in OT.
December 28th vs Detroit: They blew a 4-0 lead and lost in OT.
December 30th vs New Jersey: They had like 9 powerplays and did absolutely nothing. Lost 4-2
January 28th vs San Jose: You can't lose to San Jose at home.
February 17th at Islanders: They blew a 4-2 lead to the Islanders. They outplayed the Islanders too.
February 20th vs Islanders: They were up 2-1 and allowed 3 goals in the third period. Again they outplayed the Islanders.
March 9th vs Islanders: They blew a 3-1 lead and lost in OT.
March 14th vs Montreal: They lost to the injury plagued Canadiens at home. Unacceptable.
March 20th vs Ottawa: They lost to a goalie making his NHL debut. I knew after the Pens couldn't score within the first 10 minutes and they probably weren't going to win.
March 28th at Detroit: You can't allow Detroit to score 7 goals.
If they had won just ONE of the Islanders games, then they are in the playoffs.
If they had won all of these games, then they would have like 20 more points. That would give them 111 points instead of just 91 points. They have just gained 10 more points from those games, then they would have clinched before the Chicago and Columbus games.

Every team in the league can say they lost games they should've won. It's not exclusive to the Pens.

But no one ever acknowledges the games they won which they should've lost.

Funny how that works.

Leafs fans are the best example. Apparently the Leafs should've won every 1st round playoff series the past 6 years.

Unlucky I guess. It couldn't be the better team won. Nah.

It just seemed like the Pens blew far more games that they should have won than most other teams.

Maybe they did. Maybe they didn't. Point is it happens to all teams.

Blowing leads was a part of this teams identity this season. It wasn't flukes it was because of their roster, coaching, and other variables. Every team can say "what if we won this game or that game", but this team is deeply flawed from top to bottom.

True, but the Pens were probably affected the most from losing games they shouldn't have. I think most teams generally finished within 5 points where they should have finished based on their overall play.

As a Canucks fan, it was painful to watch them blow so many leads in the first half of the season against good teams and bad teams.

You are what your record says you are.

Bill Parcells

I mean Pens lost twice to Detroit. Nuff said.

The truth is the Pens were a plus 16 at 5v5 with one of Sid, Geno, Jake, or Zucker on the ice. Without any of those guys they were a minus 20. The pens core was asked to carry a completely useless bottom 6. Hextall traded away good transitional D in marino and matheson, for two stale older versions. Dumo was a -18 at 5v5, Carter was a -17 at 5v5, and Teddy was a -10 at 5v5. This team had some serious anchors dragging down a good top 6

Maybe you have just shown why the Pens finished out of the playoffs. Not good enough.

Yeah like the game the pens erased a 4-0 deficit against Columbus with a goal late in the 2nd and 3 goals within the first 5 minutes of the 3rd and beat them in regulation. Pens should have absolutely lost that game lol. Pens really should have lost a lot more that they ended up winning than the other way around with all the breakaways and odd man rushes they gave up this season.

Ty Smith is older than Marino or Matheson? Lol. I agree the devils trade hurt the pens which then led to the Montreal trade that hurt in the way that Petry was a downgrade from Marino skating and defense wise. But they had to trade one of the LD. Wish it was Dumo over Matheson.

Detroit lost a game in October to Chicago. IIRC they had a 3 goal lead going into the 3rd period. But they lost. There's no category in the standings for "HTL." How they lost. Or "GTSW." Games they should've won.

What I meant to say was they traded away those two to replace them with Rutta and Petry. Smith didn't even play 10 games so he wasn't on my radar.
