I'm not a winnipeg fan.
Dach at that point had proven nothing. he had 9 goals playing top 6 minutes in 70 games the year before being traded. This was playing a lot of his minutes alongside some combo of Debrincat, Kane, Kubalik, and Hagel

Past performance isn’t what determined his trade value. Hughes paid the price because of what value he thought Dach would provide to the Habs for 5 and potentially more years and at what cap hit.

No one is paying that price for PLD as a1 year rental. Habs included. Especially when we can just wait a year to sign him as a UFA.

You trade for one year of PLD. Then he’s a UFA and can go wherever he wants. And he wants to go to only one place.
Good luck getting the return you think you deserve.
His trade value is the 1 year rental price from a cup contender at the deadline (after you’ve already paid most of his contract out).
