I'd do that. Not sure how this helps NYR though, unless they simply don't have the cap space to sign him?

I know I'm not expressing the option of most NYR fans but I'll do that personally.
Because It would break me to see Laffy playing one, two maybe three more years on the top 9. I much rather pick Will Smith and play Othmann, Cuylle or Motte in that position and see Laffy light the league on fire in his home town.

Hell no for me, that is 5th OVA, what has Laf done thus far to warrant giving up that?! He has proven to be a good to average middle 6 forward, the Avs didn't even have to pay that for Lehky! If it was the Panthers 1st + the Avs 2nd for Laf and the Stars 1st sure but no way in Hell am I giving up 5th for Laf!!!

I hope a deal like this one happens. That being said, wouldn't a deal for Laf ideally bring back someone to fill a hole on the roster?

This deal IS in-line with what Hughes said he was looking for though. He said he would trade one of his 1st round picks for a young player that could accelerate his timeline. This qualifies as that kind of deal.

Look at Dach. He's looking like he's going to be a steal. Lafreniere in his 1st 3 seasons has outscored Dach. This is a player scouted and drafted by Gorton as well, so if he still believes in his potential, I would trust that the Habs know what they are doing here.

Yes it fits what Hughes is looking for, in that it's a young player not yet living up to his draft pedigree. However, severely overpaying doesn't make sense either. I like Laf and I think he has lots of room to grow but I wouldn't bet the 5th pick on it, at this point cause the odds are trending towards him being no more than a good middle 6 winger than the elite top line winger he was drafted to be. Also PLD fits the mold of the player Hughes was saying he would move a 1st round pick for, I just don't see Montreal moving 5th for very many "struggling" (I am using that term very loosely here) players.

Yeah, but with both Motte and Vesey om the team both can play Lw and Rw, and Cuylle playing well in AHL this year and Othmann probably starting in AHL and then making the roster next year there are options for NYR especially if they resign Kane or Tarasenko. Or even someone like Jesper Fast that brought out the best season out of Panarin. If to go this route I mean...

Your the only one to say that lol, I'd go with what the majority of people think over a guy who said that its realistic to trade Slaf for Kravtsov and a late 2024 first.

Yeah most Habs fans wouldnt do this tho. I dont see how Laffy is traded unless he pulls a Drouin and no shows.

In about a weeks time Rags fans are going to be begging for this deal once Farrell signs his ELC. The kid is absolutely phenomenal with his passing and vision, think Marner light.

Laffy's potential is better than anyone's at 5th OA, but he is still streaky, and needs to learn to be consistent. I think it's a pretty win-win deal especially if NY don't find the cap to pay him.

Yup. They have no clue whom Farrell is. Harvard is eliminated so they are about to see a young player that actually produces, it will be quite foreign to them after Kaako and Laffy

The Dach trade surprise was enough for me. I dont need another swerve. Just keep building, they dont need to overpay for someone like Laf whom has question marks. I dont even agree with trading for PLD but at least he's proven unlike Laffy

I would be pretty pissed if Habs traded for PLD. At the end of the day, if they trade or keep that pick I hope we get a young forward with a lot of potential, whether it is Smith, Benson, or trade for Laffy. I hope they don't reach for a D at #5

The draft will be exciting enough. My worst fear is that Hughes does a panic move if next season goes off the rails. We already had a Drouin. These experiments with Quebecois rarely work under the pressure cooker. Laffy's sakting is a real concern, he isnt explosive. He looks like at best a complementary guy that could play top6

Fair enough. Bald Kent better stay calm and not do a stupid trade (cough cough PLD) though, that would be bad.

no john it doesnt.. that top 5 pick is our last chance to pick that high.. barring winning a lottery and you need a game changing and laf has not shown that he is that..... the second pick maybe but not the first.... Those top 6 picks in this year draft will not be trading by any of the teams unless it is to move down one spot... after next season montreal will get better and will not pick in the top ten for a long time... with any luck. So no you want a player with dach or suzuki like potential to be drafted.

Depends is it a Montreal sewer rat tho? The rats are much bigger in New York. He will counter with some poutine, again, cause the rats are tiny in Poutineville, Canada. What a convo to have with these children.

I wouldn't exactly call Lafreniere a Gorton pick in that sense. He was the consensus number 1 and it doesn't take the same kind of belief or personal vision in a player to make that pick. You do it because it's the right thing to do. If he had taken Stutzle (or someone else) instead, then that would suggest it was a Gorton preferred selection. You can neither laud nor criticize him for selecting Lafreniere. Regardless of how he turns out as a player, almost, if not every GM would have made that same pick.

Hughes made the (not entirely unexpected) move in picking Slafkovsky over Wright. It was closer to 50/50 than a consensus choice, but when he traded for Dach that was putting his signature on both players. He showed a vision that went beyond simply selecting the best player available. He will be judged on how that combination of moves plays out over time and how Wright performs throughout his career.
