As a sharks fan, for the sake of the rebuild. I would take this deal, it would be beneficial for a young core resurgence.

As a neutral party from an outside look. Sturm has been the best FA signing from last offseason and fits perfectly into a 3rd line center that provides consistency and great two way play. Injuries is the only concern that leads the sharks to making this deal

Sharks had been lacking 3rd and 4th line depth for a while. Sturm is almost worth more than his actual value.

Also, why the pick?

The difference between Campbell's salary and Olofsson's is just $250k, so this barely saves Edmonton anything. I don't see why they'd do this - it's a lot to give up for a perimeter player who can't/ won't back check and is weak on the puck and in board battles. Players like that don't get to play in the top-6 in Edmonton.

Okay but hows the trade value? Columbus imo would have a hard time saying no

Maybe, maybe not. Getting to play with OP may entice him

I disagree. San Jose is getting someone they would play top 6 and a guy who will be a 45-55 point guy

Sturm was not the best FA signing at all. His contract value is good though

Because Mitts is younger, an RFA, and produces significantly more

It saves Edmonton 5 mil for the 3 seasons after though. Olofsson is better than many realize at two-way play but yes is a far-cry from being very good at that. The Oilers dont have any snipers, besides the duo there. Olofsson would add a nice element imo

I feel like its also weird to trade for greenway when he was just acquired for the price that was paid for him there must be something that warrants that price. I just don't see paying that much to flip him so soon for a man that realistically could be found via fa. I also don't like the jets trading anymore high picks with the uncertainty surrounding what direction the jets go. If any type of retool/ rebuild that 2nd becomes quite valuable in bring in more talent to develop

The Sharks org is very high on Sturm with Grier even saying at the tdl presser that it would take an overpay to get Sturm out of SJ. He's a culture driver and is being relied on to help Eklund, Thrun and all the other young guys acclimate to the league. Not to mention still putting up 15 goals and playing an elite level defensive game. He's going to wear a letter next year and is only 2mil aav for two more seasons

If they were tearing it down then it would be an amazing deal that they'd take in a heartbeat. That's just not where they feel they are right now which is why Jarmo didn't even take calls on Boone at the TDL. They want to compete and he's a part of their core that they feel they can make the playoffs with in the near future.

The first three are certainly possible and fair.
Unlikely Jenner would be available.
So you moved two forwards who are prime candidates to be replaced by Savoie and Kulich next year and picked up 2 first round picks.
I am all over that future, sustain the pipe line.
Cozens, Power, Dahlin are worth much more right now than they were when they were drafted.

THAT WOULD BE A GREAT FUTURE AND GREAT TEAM NEXT YEAR.

You do realize that Edmonton is the highest scoring team in the league, right? They have 12 players with 10 or more goals and 4 with 33 or more. And none of those 4 are named Evander Kane, who has 20+ in each of his past 7 seasons, and has scored 49 in just 92 games in an Oilers uniform.

They aren't looking for more scoring unless it comes with speed, physicality and defensive ability. Olofsson doesn't. There are teams that are desperate for goals who have cap space and will pay something for him, but I don't think Edmonton is one of them.

Well I see your perspective but I highly disagree with the idea that Columbus is a playoff team in the "near future." The East is just too stacked for them to be a playoff bound team for another 3-4 years I'd say. I can absolutely be wrong. Columbus has a solid prospect pool and they have drafted really really well imo in the past few years. If Bedard lands in Columbus the trek to playoffs is cut in half, but that's not a sure thing

Thanks for your thoughts. I was vocal on CF about my displeasure with acquiring Greenway, especially at the price. I have not yet seen anything to change my view on my displeasure. To be fair however, he has only played 8 games for us, I'd love for him to have a great season next year, but hope its with another club. Savoie needs to be in Buffalo next season if he shows he is ready and he cannot be expected to be on a checking line when his immediate strengths are skill, speed, and playmaking. He'd be perfect on a line with Krebs (they got the Winnie ICE connection too)

Yes I do realize. The main point of this trade as I iterated is to dump Campbell's contract and therefore clear cap space for the Oilers moving forward. Buffalo takes a chance on Campbell coming back to form, at least to a form of a 1B goalie. I get your point of the Oilers not needing more scoring, so perhaps the trade is just Edmonton paying to move Campbell and FC going to Edmonton.
