Matthews doesn't get traded.

End of story.

Maybe during the 2024 off season after Dubas realizes AM34 will be walking away, trade his rights to the team he wants, so that team can get a 8 year contract instead of 7 years of Matthews.

Can't give 8 years unless the player is on the team at the prior trade deadline. Trading in the off-season allows for exclusive negotiation, but that's it.

I think you are wrong, I remember the Oilers and Leafs were talking trade with Hyman in the off season a month before he was set to be UFA, the only reason was because the Oilers wanted a 8th year onto the contract.

Maybe it was a sign and trade idea.

Same, difference.

CBA 50.8.b

Elliotte Freidman on Sportsnet Central: “Thursday the freeze ends at 1pm Eastern. I think you could potentially see a Zack Hyman deal in Edmonton, and we’ll see if Toronto makes a trade with them so Hyman can get the eighth year and Toronto can get a draft pick out of it. The Maple Leafs are a little short on draft picks.”

Not only the Leafs are short on draft picks. The Buds have just three selections in each of the next two years, but the Oilers aren’t exactly flush with only five in each year. At a guess, the compensation for an early negotiating window with Hyman might be one of the two sixth-rounders Edmonton has on Saturday.

The only way that would be possible is with a sign-and-trade, which has happened exactly one time ever in NHL history since the 8-year rule became a thing. If you look up Matthew Tkachuk's current contract, it will show that it was signed by Calgary, not Florida.

Calgary Flames signed Matthew Tkachuk (8 Years / $9,500,000 AAV)

If Edmonton wanted the 8th year on Hyman after the deadline, Toronto would have had to sign him and then trade him to the Oilers.

There is a trade window around the Draft and pending UFA players can be traded, so the new team can get him signed to a 8 year deal.

There is no arguing this.

That is factually incorrect as clearly shown in Section 50.8.b of the CBA that I pasted above.

In order for his new team to sign him to a 8-year deal, a player has to be on the new team's reserve list as of the prior season's trade deadline. If he is traded around the draft, the new team has exclusive negotiation rights with the acquired player until July 1st, but they're not allowed to offer him the 8th year.
