Time to Start the Rebuild

Description
One essential element of a rebuild is draft picks: the more the better, the sooner the better. Pittsburgh's current dance card isn't overly full, so I've tried to address that here (while also accomplishing the secondary objective of moving Jeff Petry and his wife somewhere I hope that they'd like to go). JP's trade value isn't high, so in order to get the last of Chicago's four second-round draft picks in 2023, the Penguins give up their second-rounder in 2025. Pittsburgh also acquires a pick in the 49-52 range in this year's draft, as well as a selection in the fourth round plus a second next year, in return for the Penguins' first-rounder in 2024. I know -- this isn't to Pittsburgh's advantage, but with Crosby, Malkin and Letang starting to age out, picks in 2023 have greater value to the Pens than normally.

RFAs all get their Qualifying Offers; I didn't see anyone I think should get significantly more, but I'm certainly willing to be educated on the point by Pittsburgh's faithful.

I've re-upped Jason Zucker because I think that he'll continue to be productive as his career winds down. (I'm probably high on what he'll take to sign a new deal.)

Signing Justin Holl may be controversial, but he DOES play more than 20 minutes per game and with Petry leaving, the right side of the defense needs sone buttressing.

I put Adin Hill in goal at about what I think Pittsburgh might think is the ceiling to offer Tristan Jarry. I've sensed some dissatisfaction with Jarry from Pens fans.

I have Jeff Carter on the LTIR list not because I think that he's injured but because I think that the front office is going to figure out a way to get rid of him. Kids on the (non-existent) taxi squad are there because it's time to find out whether they are likely to make it in the league.

Time for my draft selections:

at 17 - 18: LWs Cody Barlow, Riley Heidt; Cs Nate Danielson, Calum Ritchie; RWs Matthew Wood, Ethan Gauthier. I don't think one of the top RhDs falls this far and I think that it's too early for Oliver Bonk (but I could be wrong).
at 51 - 52: LW Carson Rehkoff; RDs Maxim Strbak, Tom Willander; Gs Trey Augustine, Carson Bjarnason; or someone who falls out of the first round (dramatically, which isn't usually a good sign).

Hawks reject. They're rebuilding so there's no way they're trading valuable picks for cap dump players like Petry. More like Petry and '25 2nd round pick for a 7th round pick.

Would you try and trade away anyone for draft picks?

I may be on the high side, but I think that their performance this season has earned both of them raises. Look what Bum Chiarot got, and from a wise GM, too. (I won't bring Ristolainen into this.)

The core (i.e., top 6 incl Z plus Letang) is pretty good despite age, and the majority of them have restrictions on being traded, so as a practical matter, I don't think that anyone is getting moved other than Petry and perhaps (somehow) Carter. I don't see a big market for Granlund, and I doubt that any of the defenders are going to bring back much.

Hawks are not sending away draft picks, but the good news is there's no need to retain, CHI would probably eat Petry's whole deal gladly for a 2nd and a 3rd.

They're not "trading away a valuable pick," they're exchanging one second for another that's virtually guaranteed (even before the end of this season) to be earlier in the round but two years later. This frees up Murphy to be marketed for a nice high price.

Hawks aren't a good fit for Petry. They have Jones, Murphy and Zaitsev under contract for next season on the right side. Even if they buy out Zaitsev, Regula probably gets a long look in that spot. And Hawks definitely wouldn't be sending any picks back if they did make a deal for Petry. It would be future considerations or a random AHL'er back to Pens.

Sorry, but a "maybe" move up of 8 or 10 spots (not guaranteed by any stretch) to take on 2 years of Petry at $3.125m isn't close at all

I think Guentzel Rust and Petterson get traded as soon as we rebuild. The core I think it depends what they want to do. If they want to go to a contender then management should allow that. If they want to stay and mentor the young talent we draft even better.

There's no incentive for the Hawks to take that contract. Swapping 2nd's and getting a 5th is not enticing enough to pull the trigger. Like Ginandtacos mentioned, no need to retain but it'll cost more in picks. As far as the 2 2nd's go, this is a DEEP draft with the chance of getting 1st round talent in the 2nd round. That's another reason to say no thanks. Regardless of this trade there's nothing hampering the Hawks from flipping Murphy if the right offer comes along.

I like the way you approached this. The reality is that Father Time has caught this team. It’s not even the fault of the aging core who are still 3 of our 4 best players but it’s the rest of the team. The player we have to move now is Jake. He is the other member of the big 4, but unlike the others he’s under 30 and still at the peak of his career. If I’m him I honestly would test free agency and look to move on. He has to know Sid won’t play forever, so cash in elsewhere and try to put yourself in a better position to win a cup.

As far as the contracts go, I think the RFAs will make a little more and a couple of the UFA deals are too high, especially Holl. If that’s his price tag I’d much rather keep Petry, who has been adequate enough. I still hate that trade and will forever despise Flyer Ron for it, but paying a total bottom of the tank team like Chicago to take on Petry isn’t worth it to us. I’m even against dumping Carter now because I’d rather hold onto a 2nd rounder than spend it. What’s the point when we know we aren’t contending?

You also forgot to bring back Puustinen, who after Nylander is our best option in WBS. I’d rather see a “Sid and the Kids Part II” with Nylander and Puustinen as his wingers. He’s still playing at such a high level that the kids would benefit. I’d also like to see us try ti move out Rakell. He’s a valuable player to a team that’s looking to win now.

Rust will be tough to move with a NMC. I think Rakell goes before him.

Thanks for the insight on Puustinen. I saw him on the list but didn't know enough about him to re-sign him. I'll file that away. smile

I like the thought of the trades but I don't see the Petry deal happening. Anaheim might be interested in him for that price or free. I sure hope Detroit doesn't go for him, even at 50%.
The Seattle trade is interesting but I just don't see too many teams trading many second round picks this year. I think Guentzel is this teams best trade chip followed by Pettersson

I think Hawks would be more inclined to bite on that 24' 1st package with the amount of draft capital we have. Just don't think we would look to pull the trigger on that sort of a move until this time next year or next TDL.
