Description
Hextall failed to improve goaltending this offseason

He made us older

He made us slower

He lost players for literally nothing at the deadline and called it a win

He’s a loser. He lost with Philly, he’s losing with us

The stars are still unreal. Sid is having a monster year. Sully is one of the greatest to ever do it

This is 100% on Ron hextall.

Ownership is missing in action.
Transactions
1.
NJD
  1. Petry, Jeff
Détails additionnels:
Hextall traded away John marino to make room for an older, higher paid and worse defender
2.
MTL
  1. Rutta, Jan
Détails additionnels:
This guy had a career year with us for godsake. If we had held on to him we’d be talking for years about how Rutherford won this trade when everyone thought it would be horrible. MM was the best skater on the freaking team
3.
SEA
  1. Carter, Jeff
  2. Granlund, Mikael
Détails additionnels:
Hextall should have been fired out the gate for having the single worst expansion draft of any gm in the league. He lost TWO players. He gave up Tanev and McCann and protected Jeff fucking carter

Should have just exposed one of Tanev or McCann. Unbelievable
4.
VGK
  1. Heinen, Danton
Détails additionnels:
Rutherford left us with literally one of, if not the best fourth line in hockey. Hextall lost all three for peanuts

No we won't. He's been a horrible GM for years. Obviously the criticism is amplified when were on a bad streak, but look back, we've all been saying this for months. Was horrible in Philly and got fired. Has been even worse here. This isn't just because were on a losing streak, he's just bad. The fact that losing streaks happen so frequently also speaks volumes. It's because of his horrible roster construction. Majority of us have been saying he's bad since the expansion draft. I don't think we'll forget about it if we make playoffs, which is a big if. Another first round loss and sweeping change should be made. You really think he's done a good job?

Matheson skates better than Petry did at 28. Very bad trade.

I agree he's a bad GM, I don't think that's particularly up for debate. I just think it's odd a lot of penguins fans go from calling for Hextall's head and declaring the team needs to be burned to the ground during a skid (like we're seeing now), then two weeks later talking about a deep playoff run lmao

I'm going to point out one thing that I disagree with: I wouldn't mind reshuffling the coaching staff. Sully is the most successful (most successful, =/= best) coach in Pens history, neither Badger or Bowman were here long enough for that title. He should have had at least one Jack Adams by now. But I'm wondering if he's reached his shelf life in Pittsburgh.

Part of what made him effective during the back to back cups was his willingness to shake up the roster. He benched players when they deserved it and brought up guys from WBS when they were hot. He hasn't this season. But maybe I'll throw him a mulligan here since he was the WBS coach when we replaced Bylsma and he knew those guys much better than the ones in our system now.
Now we're here watching Brian Dumoulin get top 4 ice time instead of POJ. Watching Jeff Carter be on the ice with 2 minutes remaining and the Pens down a goal.

We constantly overcommit on offense, which leads to constant odd-man rushes going the other direction. The best team that gives up more shots per game than us is the Coyotes. Special teams are pathetic. We play like we're 5 years younger and faster than we are. Sullivan and his staff run a system that isn't best suited for the team we have. And here we are 70 games into the season having not adapted to that team.

Even if we want to keep Sully because the core guys love and respect him, a new voice in the locker room couldn't hurt, could it? If not Sully, what about Todd Rierdan. He works the defense and PP, both of which have massively underperformed expectations. Hextall absolutely needs to go for his choices with the roster, but it's hard for me to argue that this coaching staff is getting the most out of the roster Hextall gave them.

As it happens, I've been working on a rebuild CGM for Pitt. I've love to have all you guys pitch in on it.

I'm sure Hextall and Burke are sitting in the Pens executive dining room, all day long, eating and drinking and telling stories on how smart they are, and how other hockey executives, fans, and the media are so stupid.
I'm dismayed at times how ownership groups don't have a short leash on GMs who can destroy a franchise for years. Owners should be following CapFriendly for advice, not necessarily their GM.nod

Just my thought on Pens. Last summer for good opportunity to restructure the team for the future. But then the aging Rakell, Rust and Letang got long term contracts.

Looking back on these moves and even at the time I thought most were questionable. I never understood the Petry moves, complete lack of logic there in my opinion. Did Hextall actually think Seattle would select a 36 year old Jeff Carter? That was just silly. Exposing Tanev makes sense. Great guy to have on the team but kind of a big contract.
