Description
I know people are going to disagree with this. And I know there's almost 0 chance we do it this offseason. What the team does and what I think we should do are 2 different things though. Completely fine if people disagree. But I think this team is cooked I think. This years team is done and I think it would take extremely significant change to make it into a contender for next year. And even if we did and made multiple huge trades/signings our chances would still be low, especially with Sully at coach imo. Great coach, but it's beyond his expiration date. We'll likely have a new GM as well and so it will be a good transition point. I know people are saying no rebuild until the core retires. But they could all potentially play 5-6 more seasons and I just don't see any way we contend that entire time. I think we likely miss playoffs this year and potentially are near bottom of standings next year. Anyways, here's what I would do this offseason.

These are tough one's. I would only do this if the core want out. I would inform them of rebuild and give them the option of staying or being traded to a contender. Whatever they decide I would do. I'd hope they stay, but they deserve the chance to win another cup

If Malkin and Letang were expendable we would not have resigned them. As long as 87 wants them here they have to stay. Everyone else is on the market.

Yeah Montreal is not giving up a top 5 pick + 2nd for Letang, sorry just not logical for a rebuilding team

Considering Malkin has attacked the Carolina market before, I doubt they'd have any interest in his declining anchor

Too much for Detroit to give up for those two players.
I doubt any of the other teams are interested in those moves either. I wouldn't mind Guentzel in Detroit but it wouldn't be worth giving up what he would cost for us.

First, that Letang trade is hilarious. Letang, often injured and signed for term and high AAV is almost untradeable and is certainly not worth a 1st, especially from a rebuilding team. Letang will not suddenly end the rebuild, no way Montreal considers this.

Second, Detroit doesn't need either player. Rust is over 30, and Petry 35. This doesn't align with the rebuild timeline, with old players likely to decline as the team is ready to compete. Add 3 million retained on Rust, take back Chiarot, and make it 2 4th round picks, and Detroit accepts.

Finally, you might be right about Pettersson, but I doubt it. 1 goal a year doesn't net you a 1st.

What if they asked to be traded to a contender once we rebuild?

5 years left on an over 35 contract, meaning the contract is a guaranteed full cap hit. He's 36. He has injury history.

This is one of the worst deals in the league right now. I understand why it was signed, the window is now...but any playoff run is unlikely without an 03 Giguerre level goaltending run.

I know it hasn’t been said yet, because all the other ones are pretty terrible too, but that Sabres trade is laughably bad. The first round pick alone is likely a top 10 pick. Guentzel isn’t even the kind of player they should be looking for, scoring goals is no longer their problem.

Well Guentzel will get a guaranteed first from someone. That's for sure even if it's not you guys

Agreed. It's not a question of value. It's a question of timeline. The only way we take Letang is if we throw the rebuild out and take Crosby too. But of course we are not ready for that.

Malkin is a very effective player when he is healthy, however, therein lies the problem. Not to mention the 2 other factors that would keep him out of Carolina: he has attacked the Raleigh market before, and his contract pays him 6.1mil until he is 40. Every GM would be stupid to give up a 1st and 3rd for an injury prone player on a rather unfortunate contract like Malkin, no matter his pedigree and resume. A few years ago, sure, teams would be lining up with a couple of firsts for Malkin. Now, not so much.

What team will make this trade? What team has a cup window open for only another year or 2, has the cap space, and the need for Letang? This is a 35 plus contract with top 2D AAV with 4-5 more years left (depending on when he gets traded). I don't see any potential trade partners, outside maybe Washington, but if they are the only suitor, there isn't much chance a 1st is in play.

MAYBE 3 OR 4 YEARS OF Guentzel IS WORTH A FIRST AND MORE FROM A LOT OF TEAMS BUT 1 YEAR WILL JUST GET YOU A TDL LATE 1ST

This take is fine. If it is TDL next year, I'd expect something like the Giroux to Florida trade, honestly. Maybe a bit less because of being a wing and not center.

Someone did for Ben Chiarot, and Peterson is way way better than him offensively. He's had a fantastic season

Chiarot had more goals last season than Pettersson had in his career up to that point. The assists are more a product of the team...Montreal had no finishers, and Detroit's offense is quite anemic after Larkin. Chiarot is also a big body, hard nosed guy...
MP is a fine defensive defenseman but he brings no other game. Big bodied defenseman carry a ton more trade value at the deadline than a one dimensional defenseman that is a black hole for offense. Any team acquiring MP would be getting him as insurance against an injury, not as a top 4. The Chiarot trade was a bit of a shock, yes, but multiple teams were in on him, and there weren't many like Chiarot available, so there was a premium.
