Grading Leafs deadline trades

Description
ROR and Noel Acciari trade = A+: Acciari has been a difference maker ever since joining the fourth line. He throws his weight around and gives a total effort. ROR has shown glimpses of what he can do but it sucks that the injury happened. I find this the best trade out of all the ones that were made

McCabe and Lafferty trade = B+ : I was going to give this trade an A just like the ROR and Acciari deal but man has Lafferty been a disappointment. Although things can change, Lafferty looks like a guy that can be healthy scratched and I don't like how we gave up a 2nd for him (at least it's in 2025) if that's the direction we are going in. In all honesty, I never understood the hype for this guy other than his speed. McCabe on the other hand has been a beast next to Brodie, they complement each other so well. The short stint between McCabe with Holl does not work though but I get why Keefe is doing it

Sandin trade = D- : This trade just straight up sucks. From Dubas' perspective, I get why he made the deal. Sandin was never getting the ice time he is getting with WSH but the times that he did get that ice time, he never did anything with it. On the other hand, he is still 22YO and has room to grow and develop, I just think the Leafs gave up on him too early OR could have used him as a big trade piece to add a difference maker to the team (top 6 LW that we badly need right now). In terms of Gus, he is a 10th defensemen on any contender, what does he even do? He can't defend, he hasn't scored or put up an assist on the power play, I thought that's his specialty? Keefe even put McCabe in OT against the Avs before Gus (LOL). At the very least of this trade, we got a late first round draft pick in a deep draft but don't be surprised if we use it to dump Murray. This trade could look better depending on how Sandin projects and what the Leafs do with the first rounder or the trade could look much worse if Sandin ends up putting 50+ points next season and wins the Norris

Engvall trade = (*) C- : I'm putting an asterisk on this grade considering Engvall has been on a three goal heater while Lafferty is hasn't made an impact. At the very moment, I would much rather have Engvall over Lafferty

Luke Schenn trade = (*) B- : I love this player and I want to watch him every night considering the big hits that he throws and is underrated defensively, he gives me Bogosian vibes. If Keefe is making this guy a #8 defensemen (Gus as #7), why did we trade a 3rd round pick for an 8th defensemen in a deep draft?

One thing to add, I have a strong sense that Dubas isn't liking the way Keefe is deploying the team after all the resources that he gave him

You can't grade any of their trades yet. The only thing that matters is what they do in the playoffs.

Only time will tell if these trades payoff, but I do agree with your logic. I wonder if Meier hadn't gone to the Devils, that Toronto could've sent the Sharks a package that included Sandin since the McCabe trade sorta chewed him out of the lineup anyway. That would've addressed the LW issue in my opinion.

I would have loved Meier but he would be a rental for us and not being able to keep him past this year would make the trade look worse. What about Konecny?

Yeah, that's true, I wouldn't mind Konecny either. Case in point, Sandin would've been better used in a package to reel in a LW like Meier or Konecny regardless of the problems of the future. Interesting thing to think about though: if Toronto did manage to acquire Meier, I'd imagine he would've sold to another team for a good price at the draft.

wow, grading trades after a handful of games? Grade the trades, but grading them based on a 5-10 game sample?

Dont know how the ROR trade gets an A when hes already on LTIR? or Acciari who has 3 goals in 12 games as a Leaf? You realize you gave up a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th for a handful of ROR games and 3 goals from Acciari, and thats an A?

Ultimately, is this the Leaf fan disease that somewhat meaningless things are counted as victories? I mean the Leafs goal is to advance into the playoffs for a change, but you're grading transactions after 5-10 regular season games? Will we have another of these next week and the week after to see if the grades change?

ROR has been good while he was playing and his injury is a broken finger. It could have been someone else but unfortunately it was him

Just saying it seems like a ridiculous premise to judge trades based on 5-10 games without looking at what was given up and give out a A grade for ROR and Acciari based on those 5-10 games, without really thinking about what those 5-10 games cost in trade.

6 goals and 2 assists in 2 expiring UFA players playing 15 mins a night or less in 12 regular season games since TDL, cost a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th and gets an A grade?

Who says they could be rentals? Acciari got his family a Canadian passport, I think he's going to stay. ROR family are huge Leafs fans, I can see him being on the team next season

You're reaching....You are grading them on a small 5-12 game example AND THEN looking well ahead and counting on them to re-sign, you cant have it both ways.

Are you that upset that the Leafs didn't overpay for a flyer?

You can judge a trade early and again later on. For example, the Foligno trade looked pretty good at first as he fit in very well with Matthews and Marner. Then he got hurt and never recovered enough to be of help after JT was injured 5 minutes into game 1. Most judge it as a terrible trade but the reality is it was unlucky more than anything else. ROR will be back before the playoffs and should be a great addition. So the initial response, yeah good move but like you said, we'll have to see how it pans out down the road.

Sandin is producing offense at this rate because he's playing 25 minutes a night in a highly offensive role but is being sheltered defensively. He's playing 3 out 4 shifts in the offensive zone and playing on the first powerplay. No PK! Plus extra motivation to shove in Toronto's face! Right now he is there number one offensive defenseman! In Toronto he played less minutes, played on the second powerplay, was the second offensive defenseman and played 2 out 3 shifts in the offensive zone! Morgan Riley has been one of the top offensive defenseman for years and has played against tougher matchups! And don't forget about pressure you have been playing in Toronto! Especially as an offensive defenseman who are likely to make more mistakes! Sandin won't be successful if he plays the role Morgan Riley play!! Maybe in the future but I doubt it!

Lafferty is as good as Engvall. Lafferty is actually better suited for the role Engvall played in Toronto. Lafferty is more physical, blocks more shots, a more agile skater, better penalty killer, more versatile, right handed forward who can play center, cheaper contract for a year longer and can fight be annoying if needed! Just give it some time he'll be a good player in Toronto!

Dubas has put together a good team but it's now up to the players to slay the Dragon and then try to bite and kill the Beast in the East! If they do that they'll be the favorite to win it all!!
