I don't think the author of the post Rocket Rusty understands that there is salary cap in the NHL. Go back to September, how would the Leafs fit Hyman into the cap? The other issue...and we won't know for a few years, whether a seven year contract for Hyman is good value. Also, fans don't seem to understand the concept of "UFA", Hyman's decision to sign with any team he wanted.

Leafs couldnt afford Hyman because they paid 11 M for a player who was only at 8 M in scoring. Dubas overpaid Tavares. Tavares "wanted" to come to the Leafs.
Over paying Tavares also lead to Matthews and Marner getting a bit more than they should have.
Simply bad cap management.

Not sure that moving on from Hyman was a great decision in hindsight, but letting Campbell go sure as hell was. Dude has single handedly sunk the Oilers season so bad even McDavid can't outscore it.

EDM had two players on emergency call up very recently counting as 0 against the cap just to ice a 20 man roster.

It's also presumptuous of you to assume the leafs didn't want Hyman back, please state who you know inside the leafs organization that gave you that information.

It was necessary because of the cap. I went on record at the time stating I didn't want him back because he deserved to get and we couldn't pay him what he deserves. I still maintain that stance and am glad he's doing well.

BECAUSE THE LEAFS OVER PAID TAVARES LESS THAN OTHER TEAMS WERE GOING TO OVER PAY HIM DOES NOT JUSTIFY OVER PAYING TAVARES.
TAVARES WAS OVER PAID 3.3 M IN 2018-19, OVER PAID 4.5 M IN 2019-20, OVER PAID 3.5 M IN 2020-21, OVER PAID 4.4 M IN 2021-22 AND HE IS OVER PAID 3.3 M THIS YEAR.

HAD THE LEAFS OFFERED TAVARES 7 M, THEY HAD ENOUGH TO SIGN HYMAN. IF TAVARES DIDN'T TAKE THE MONEY, NO WORRIES, THE LEAFS WOULD HAVE A BETTER TEAM TODAY.
