This makes absolutely no sense for Vancouver. I mean, finally they're getting good blueliners instead of immobile large boys but it cost them 2/3rds of a Phil Kessel and won't put them above most teams in the west next year.

Smarter for Detroit since they're not going to make the playoffs and even if they don't want to use the picks, they now have more options. Like that Chychrun guy or something.

Yzerman watched Hronek get burned like a piece of toast twice in two nights against Ottawa and launched him out of a cannon. Hilarious

Vancouver is already capped out next season (higher cap hits than this season) is the most glorious part for a rebuilding...cough..cough..retooling team.
Your 2023-24 Canucks are set and loaded to compete!

Van needs defense goes and gets offensive Dman whose having a one off year defensively

As when u look at OEL I dont think he and Hronek gonna work well

Not really a one-off year. Hronek's had a 40-point pace every year he's been in the league despite being on one of the worst offensive teams.

2018-19: 46 games, 23 points | DET 22nd in scoring
2019-20: 65 games, 31 points | DET 31st in scoring
2020-21: 78 games, 38 points | DET 30th in scoring
2022-23: 60 games, 38 points | DET 22nd in scoring

Value wise, it's fine, but it makes no sense for the Canucks. Keep the the first and second rounder, and then have 4.4m in cap to spend elsewhere this summer.
Looks like the Wings are clearing some cap (although they have a lot) for what might be a more expensive but better UFA (at some position), and now they have two good picks also.

Offense was not something Van needed for their Dcore

They needed Defense and Hronek is having a one off year in that department thanks to having a partner like Maatta

Vancouver must be the only team in history to be 6th last in the standings and trade a 1st round pick for a roster player at the deadline. Just an absolute catastrophe, do the people running this clown show not understand how to compete in the NHL? Do they not understand the draft and the salary cap? The team is not good. The team has bad contracts. The team needs to rebuild. Yet they do everything possible to thwart a rebuild and commit and then recommit to being mediocre for year after year after year. I've been a Canucks fan for decades, but I'm 100% checked out on this team. Unbelievably bad management, I don't blame Pettersson or whoever else who opts to skip town at the first opportunity, because the playoffs are many years away for this dumpster fire of a franchise.

I mean, I like the package received for Hronek, but now Det has no one outside of Seider on the right side.

Hronek is a rfa at the end of his current deal

I didn't even notice that. So they got one year of term and he's an RFA. If he gels with Hughes, then this is a good deal for the Canucks. That could change if the Islanders crap the bed for the rest of the season and get a really good draft pick.

Hronek is an offensive D man too though, I don't think him and Hughes make sense as a pairing at all.

Very true Hronek's hot streak came when he was paired with Maatta a defensive dman.

This ain’t it patty, I like Hronek but not at that price, maybe a 1st and a 4th for him but a 1st and 2nd in this year is a mistake

I really like the idea of getting a potential top 10 pick in what is going to be a great entry draft, however why are we trading one of our best young defensemen?

This is the best deadline of all time

I think it's the opposite. Ekholm, Schenn, Horvat. Too many have left my favourite teams. At least for Horvat and Ekholm, NSH and VAN got good returns.

Wow. I really like this for the Canucks. They finally got their Hughes partner.

Why do you think two small offensive d-men with below average defense will make a good pairing?

Hughes has always needed a defense first partner like Tanev or Schenn to be successful.

Hronek is very similar. Who is going to clear the net? Or win battles in the corner?

This is not a Top-10 pick. It's Top-12 protected by the Islanders, unless NYI crashes and burns this year and next, it's likely a 13-24 range pick.

I was expecting to see Chychrun comparisons here once that trade was announced, so I’ll try to get it started. Here’s a summary of the facts:

• The 1sts are likely going to be within a couple of picks of each other. As of today, Ottawa’s is 6 picks earlier, but there are only 6 points between them and Ottawa has 4 games in hand.

• Ottawa paid two 2nds while Vancouver paid one, but the Vancouver 2nd will be early in the round, and it’s in this year’s draft while the 2nds Ottawa gave up are in future drafts.

• Chychrun and Hronek have similar cap hits. Chychrun’s is $200,000 higher.

• Chychrun is signed for one year longer than Hronek.

• Chychrun will be a UFA at the end of his contract (assuming he doesn’t sign an extension first). Hronek will be a RFA with a qualifying offer of $5.28M.

• Vancouver also got a 4th-round pick. Ottawa didn’t get any picks.

So who got the better deal? I don’t know either player well, but from what I’ve heard about them, it sounds like Chychrun is the better player and the difference in what they paid isn’t enough to offset that. Hronek being an RFA at the end of his contract is an advantage for Vancouver, but I think his higher qualifying offer and the extra year Chychrun has partially offsets that, so I’d vote for Ottawa.

He could be worth that, he’s certainly worth his current cap hit. Salary cap will have increased by then.

This trade is horrible for Vancouver, and it's the best move Yzerman has made in quite awhile.

The thing with this trade is that the value isn't crazy. If Edmonton made a similar trade, you can accept it. This is because when you trade in a way that makes strategic sense for where your team is on it's trajectory, you don't need to "win" every trade. You can break even on trades, or even lose in terms of overall value, but if the trades converts value that is less useful for you into value that is more useful, you can do ok, and your moves are defensible and less risky. In those scenarios, you can either break even, or win your trades on average, without worrying about the direct outcome of each individual trade. It's why the strategy of tearing it down and building it up is so strong. Just following the blueprint and doing ok in your trades works out fine. If you are in the rebuild mode, you can trade current value for future value, and as long as you do OK on average, your blueprint will lead to a period of contention and relevance. You need to stick to it, and avoid any false starts, but you don't need to win every single trade outright. Same is true with contenders, you can somewhat trade away assets that would mostly have helped you stay mediocre during a phase where maybe you should be rebuilding again, because those assets aren't going to be as valuable to you as players that can help your core potentially maximize their window.

However to do a real Re-tool on the fly, which is apparently what Vancouver is insisting on, you need to win your trades. Because you are basically trading current/near future value for current/near future value, the only way you improve is if you get significantly more value back than you traded away. Vancouver has not done that in this trade. They paid max value for a player that doesn't put them over the hump. The team that started this season was obviously no where near good enough to compete. Next year they will start without Horvat, but have Hronek and Beauvllier. That's a downgrade, and what they got for that downgrade, and that downgrade takes up as much cap space as they would likely have had to use to sign Horvat, and they got Raty as the prize for taking that downgrade. That just makes no sense.
