Chychrun is 1 year younger , and the contract will start in his age 27 season. Chabot is a top 5 offensive defenseman in the league and while defense isn't his strength , he's far from a liability. His contract is under market value and is signed through most of his prime years. He's a #1 defenseman, Chycvhrun is more of a #2 guy.

I have a conspiracy theory that is the only possible explanation for why Arizona continues to exist as a franchise.
It is a Bettman created concept, with a team introduced into the league that's sole purpose is to influence changes in directions which only a team entity is able.

In order to enhance parity, Bettman uses the Coyotes to siphon off draft picks from good teams.
To give teams an outlet to remove contracts, he uses the Coyotes to absorb contracts which prevent actual teams from being competitive.
To influence the market, he has the Coyotes set the prices for transactions. How much it costs to dump cap, how much a rental player is worth, how much a good player should garner, etc.

Trying to bring the market back to a semblance of sanity, is the only explanation for Arizona selling off one of the most coveted available players in the league for essentially half price.
It's a splash of cold water on a fire that spread too quickly. He's using this trade to tell teams they went way overboard and need to re-evaluate for the remainder of the deadline and off-season when it comes to player values.

The truth is always that trade value is only as useful as two teams hold it to be. The fact that Ottawa and Arizona struck a deal for a better LHD at lesser value than Edmonton paid for Ekholm only means Edmonton was desperate for a big move and Arizona is Gary’s project to send message to the rest of the league.

The NHL making the other sports deadlines look like a kids happy meal for once.
