A few notes:
- Varly is likely to not get traded, Sorokin likely wants Varly back so its welll worth the price to retain varly to keep sorokin happy
- I had a nightmare last night that we gave Mayfield a Chiarot-type deal lolllll. Unless if he is willing to take under 2.5 for 2 years, I dont want him back
- These past few games have made me realize a few things. Brock can work with anyone and Palms is actually good. Duclair is cheap and would give that line three legit threats
- Currently, when healthy, have a 3rd line of Parise-Pageau-X (Holmstrom normally or Wahlstrom?). This third line has tons of upside, have chemistry and have insane talent. Id much prefer running this than having three veterans play it
- Revamped 4th line. Durandeau has been a beast, works hard, fast and good on both sides and creates tons of chances and draws penalties. Having a 4th line like this would basically be what the identity line was in its prime, but better. I am in love with it. Durandeau doesnt have that offensive upside, but can be an awesome 4LW two-way forward
- Wahlstrom seems to not really have a spot. He should play the left side (Ovi's office) for us on PP1 and be the one-timer guy which will get him some more minutes, but at this point my mindset on him is that he needs to earn it. I get it that he is hurt, but his talent is no longer enough. Once he shows he can produce and create opportunity, he can take either Duclair or Palm's spot.
- Defense is pretty obvious. TVR has great analytics and I doubt he gets a much bigger deal than this. Id be willing to go up to 3 mil for 1 years or 2.5 or under for 2-3 years.
- Coaching change seems possible, especially if Lou goes. A few options are listed below. I highly doubt Boudreau comes back to hockey but if he does, he may want to reunite with Horvat.
Nolan Pratt, current Colorado assistant coach
Andrew Brunette, current New Jersey associate coach
Jeff Halpern, current Tampa Bay assistant coach
Bruce Boudreau, former Vancouver head coach
- On July 1st of 2023, extend Sorokin to a 6 years, $7,166,666 per year deal. 43 mil total, he gets some term and slots in well in the market. Its hard to predict goalie contracts because he could try to negotiate to Vasi money, but I just cannot see it. But if he does get 9+ mil, he will reset the entire market. He also gets good term for both sides. Will be 35 once the deal ends. If he hit FA when he turned 33, he wouldnt get this much. But if he hit it right now, he could 100% get a 3 year deal at like 9 mil per. So both sides meet in the middle.
I have fallen in love with this lineup. That top 6 is the best we have had in years, and the bottom six has a safe floor with tons of upside. Worst case scenario, we sign another forward and it evens out. We could even start the season with Suter as the 3C then move to wing if we start Iskhanov starts off in the AHL, even tho he has shown he can dominate there. 13-27-40 in 49 as a center is 100% ready for the NHL after 3 years of pro hockey.
Not sure if they would still be interested this offseason. But if they are, I see a trade like this making sense.
CAR
Assuming Pacioretty retires. He fills a need for them and his production is bound to increase. Beauvillier's success will poise other teams to see the upside of taking Islanders players who underwhelm (Pageau has been great for us but offensively has had no weapons to succeed)
I know Preds fans will hate this, but this is very likely. And its not even that bad. Easily can retain and flip at TDL at 2.5 mil for some assets. Or can hold and mentor youth. I havent predicted the Preds lineup next season, but its likely that Tomasino and Kemell become 100% full timers and you can never have enough leadership!

Plain and simple. No room for him, Edmonton throws a 5th for him. Could be any team but since they are always tight to the cap, I picked them
Zero chance Martin retires with a year left on his contract. Why would he? In addition to the money he'd be forfeiting, he's already tied his career high in points with like 20 games to go, so I'm sure in his eyes, he's still "got it".

Surprisingly, even the analytics don't hate MM this season. I have zero problem with him sticking around for the last year of his deal - he's only $1.5M, it's a little more than you want to pay a bottom-6 guy, but it's nothing egregious. Let him play it out, retire, and join the org as a scout/AHL coach/whatever his next step is.

My fear is the extension Lou is going to be tempted to offer him after next season.
