That's not how it works. The "deadline cap space" reported on the CapFriendly team page is already pro-rated and is how much full-season cap space a team can take on and still be compliant.

Double retained, Kane still carries a full-season cap hit of 2.625M. The Rangers have $1.615M in deadline cap space. In order to fit Kane, they'd to clear $1.01M of full-season cap hit.

So we had 4.6m TDL space before the trade, how do we still have 1.6m while adding 6m and subtracting next to nothing. We currently at at 83.7M cap hit but projections for space while no LTIR. You understand it the way you say because this site doesn’t have the capability to properly handle the calculations. Let’s jump back to the days when BOS as an example had next to no space and acquired a guy named Hall 8M hit but 50% retained.. they couldn’t do 4M but his 1.33m remaining was done. Let’s layman this. TDL is a the 2/3 of the season mark. Meaning 1/3 of contracts are left. So to add a 6M guy you only need 2M space. Now if he is retained twice his cap hit goes 6M>3M>1.5M but then only a third of that 1.5M is accounted for as the new teams cap hit. 500M for a 6M guy… this is how it’s actually done

Kane can not be such a diva and expect the league to wait forever for his decision. Reportedly CHI isn't helping his case by asking (one of the kids on the kid line) first + another pick... that is just way too much for a rental.
