What else is LA giving VAN? Spence and the 1st would be the compensation for having to take Petersen

That's insanity. Petersen's cap hit isn't that bad.

$3.85M next season, $1M in 2024-25 season, $2M in 2025-26.

That doesn't warrant a 1st round pick in the best draft in a decade and a top defensive prospect.

Neither are the Kings paying out the nose for a goalie with just as bad stats as Quick and Peterson, along with an injury history and only ~10 games to prove his worth before the deadline.

Peterson's contract is way overblown because nobody outside of Kings fans cares to look at the actual details of what a buyout would be for him. In addition, the Kings aren't cap strapped to the point where they need to dump him anyway. So there's no leverage for outside teams there.

See tkecanuck341's post above to look at how low the cap hit for Peterson would be from a buyout after burying him in the AHL next season and then proceeding with the buyout.

And a buyout might not even be necessary, if Cal can regain his form. There's nothing saying he isn't as likely to do that as Demko is to regain his form.

Hawks probably decline. They'd probably want the '23 2nd instead of the '24 2nd, or a young F prospect instead of Walker or Grundstrom. This deal as proposed just isn't the right mix of assets for the Hawks.

Yet another foolish and anti-factual Demko-for-Petersen-and-the-2023-first nonsense.

There are 11 games left before the trade deadline, and Demko isn't off the IR list yet 10 weeks into his "6-week" anticipated rehab time. Anybody who would trade significant assets for him without seeing him play at least 20 games has the IQ of a fish. And he may not have time to get those 20 games in before the end of this season.

As I've said many times before in response to various iterations of this proposal, the entire underlying premise -- that Petersen's cap hit is a burden which must be relieved immediately -- is utterly unfounded. Our roster for next season is basically set as to all principal players with only a $1 million rise in the cap ceiling, and there have been rumors lately that the rise may be $4 million, not $1 million.

Yes it does. And that isn't his cap hit. His cap hit is $5M for next season and the season after, with an actual salary owed of $11M over those two seasons, and thats without even considering his cap hit and salary for the rest of the current season. That is a cap dump worthy of AT LEAST a 1st round pick, if not more.

While he's buried in the AHL, his NHL cap hit is $3.85M. He has already cleared waivers and doesn't have a NMC, so there's no reason why they can't just leave him down there.

The Kings will then buy him out in June 2024 (assuming his play doesn't rebound), and he'll have a buyout cap hit of $1M in 2024-25 and $2M in 2025-26.

They'll probably consider a 2nd round pick to move his contract, otherwise they'll just eat it and hope he rebounds, then buy him out next summer.

Yeah. Exactly. This is only if, for whatever reason, they deem it necessary to move his contract ASAP. But it doesn't seem like it will be necessary any time soon.
