Basically just making room for Knyzhov's long awaited return. Pretty good return for a bottom pairing defenseman. I'll take it.

Now SJ has traded all of Karlssons D partners for higher value then they would get if they didn't have their stats bolstered by EK. Dillon, Middleton and now Megna. Only Knyzhov remains due to injury but the org is really high on Kny.

San Jose has made it clear they want to add more goaltender prospects to the mix and likely don't want to use a high round pick. I'm betting this goes towards another goaltender prospect like 5th rounder Mason Beaupit last year.

I think this is a solid defensive depth move for the Kraken, as a second year franchise they don’t have a ton of depth along the blueline to cover if injuries hit, and Megna can provide some reliable insurance in that area. I think he’ll help fill in during Justin Schultz’s absence and compete with Carson Soucy and Cale Fleury when everyone’s healthy.

The cost seems fine too, I think it’s solid value for both sides. With Seattle pursuing a playoff spot but still a newer franchise whose true window of contention is still to come, depth moves like this are what’s probably best for the team this deadline. Megna being signed for next season at what will be a below minimum cap hit is a nice bonus as well.

Trade season has arrived in Seattle. Go Kraken!

Just like new teammate Jamie Oleksiak, Jaycob Megna is a big, tall, mobile, defensive minded LD with limited offensive output.

They are both the same age, can kill penalties and hover around 20 minutes a night.

Both Megna and Oleksiak were traded for 4th round picks at some point in their careers.

Interestingly, some of their stats for this season are nearly identical.

Fair deal.

At first glance this looked like a pretty big overpay by Seattle (I thought Megna was a career AHLer) until I read he was playing on the top pair and putting up solid results.
With that in mind, Megna seems like a solid depth add and this deal oks to be decent for both sides.

Decent move for Seattle to bolster their defensive depth, SJS gets a 4th round pick in a stacked draft for a player that was on waivers. I like this for both sides given each of their needs; truly a fair deal

SEA defense is 16th in GAPG

And their PK is 31/32 in the League

A guy like Megna makes sense as he has been a solid Defensive Dman to the point where SJS was comfortable putting him with EK

Honestly the contract limit is fairly fake. It's easy enough to dump a cheap contract by either throwing in a guy who is unlikely to make it since the receiving team wouldn't have any cap implications for taking back the player. A guy like Emond who likely doesn't see a qualifying offer, for instance, could be thrown in with the trade and probably continue playing in Wichita and just have a different person signing his paycheck.

I wouldn’t say it’s “fake”. It’s a legitimate factor, just easily solvable. But if they expect to get 2 or more players back in their next trade, not they have the flexibility to do so.

Grier makes another solid move. Megna is a big and strong dman who has been playing quite solidly this season, and a fourth is great value for what both sides are getting. Moving Meygna while his value is at the highest clears the dman log jam they have with Knyzhov, Hatakka (next year potentially), and newly aqcuired Jacob MacDonald. It also opens up a contract spot for the Sharks to use in another trade. Grier has made a ton of small moves and I think each one is pretty solid
