Horvat's a great player, but not good enough to be a franchise cornerstone.

Feels like the Islanders have a similar situation that Vancouver had, where they have a core that's good, but not great.

Now that the Trotz magic has run out, and their once playoff deadly depth is depleting, I can't see them going very far for a while.

Barzal is gonna play on the wing I think

So, basically, Lou is going to try and turn Barzal into something that he's not.

Good to know.

I also think paying Horvat the same as Stamkos, Draisaitl and Zibanejad is a little suspect.

For all the people posting that he’s going to be the Isles’ 2nd line center, I think we’ll see Barzal move to the wing. More than enough teams would pay 9.1 and 8.5 for a top line Center and Winger.

A good signing is not enough to justify a bad trade.

Also, the funny thing for the Isles is that Pageau and Cizikas are now their #4 and #5 centres respectively.

After Barzal, Horvat and Nelson.

Somebody will have to be moved out.

Barzal is probs gonna be moved to wing as the guys got faceoff issues.

Probs gonna be 1c = Horvat, 2c = Nelson, 3c = Pageau, 4c = Cizikas

oh 100% it's an awful contract. People sh*t on the Miller deal but I'd much rather have him at 8x7 over Bo's deal

The combination of The Trade and The Signing is the biggest gamble I can ever recall any GM ever making. At least you have to admire the nerve of a guy to throw the dice like that.

Me, I'm biased. In my worldview, the Hippocratic Oath applies to GMs, too. As Damon Runyon famously said, The race is not always to the swift nor the battle to the strong, but it's the smart way to bet.

For a 23 player roster, the Islanders can invest roughly 1.15 million per player next season. It's not that dire of situation considering they don't have any major RFAs coming up, but it's not a great place to be in if you want to add anyone significant in FA.

Agree to disagree, forwards are old. They arent farming in much young talent there to replace them. This team built a window to win within 2 years and they might not even make playoffs with how loaded the east is.

Meh contract, Horvat’s a good low end 1c/high end 2c, of course the contract will age badly but Lou’s paying him to be good for the front years, no GM has ever cared about the back years of an 8 year deal

Bo Horvat has signed a new contract with the New York Islanders.

Same as it always is, teams jump the gun on signing a player to a long-term expensive deal. The difference here is, he hasn’t played a shift for the team yet.

Not a wise move by Lou, but he may have a contingency plan (a few interested teams) who are willing to do a deal at the draft before any sort of NMC or NTC kicks in.

Funny how everyone says its such a bad contract. Cap percentage wise it's les then what Draisaitl signed for and everyone thought that was a horrible deal for the oilers. Horvat will be tied with four others for 39th highest in the league.

Pasternak, Dubois, Meier, Larkin, Debrincat and possibly Caufield will pass them dropping it to 44-45th. Don't see what all the fuss is about I'd take him on my team for 8.5.

Edmonton took a bet as Draisaitl was just entering his prime, Horvat is exiting it in more or less 2 seasons after a clear outlier season. It's also hard not to call it a bad deal when the GM who signed it said it's too much money and too much term.

I wish they had an okay option. I went with no because it's more bad than good but it's not terrible.

Signing a guy having a career year is always hard. In today's values he's likely been a high 6 to about 7 mil a year type player. He's playing like a 10 mil plus player this year. So valuing him is hard. It also likely won't age great.

People are ragging this but imagine if the Pens traded Kapanen, a 1st, and one of their comparables to Raty (as there are many and VAN mgmt knows our system inside and out) and then signed him to this deal?

That would have been tremendous and would have given us runway after everyone else finishes. Now we get to play against him and battle him to get in instead.

He would have been a super expensive 3C for sure but on a team like the Pens he could have moved around the line up and we would have been able to ice three lines that would be #1 eligible on most teams! The matchups would have been in our favor for the rest of the window. The second PP unit would have always been more dangerous.

Cross your fingers we can get Tarasenko, Schenn, Gavrikov/Korpisalo because we need some reinforcements!

Yet Barzal who is only two years younger and other then 2017-2018 where he was just over a point per game has been a 65-70 point player who win's less then 45% of his draws is worth over 9? Horvat is worth 8.5 because he's a two way center who wins more then half his draws not a center who'd be better on the wing.

He's going to play 1st line, but that doesn't mean he's a 1st line center. Kadri had that godly year last year and took 7m long term. It was a way better season than what Horvat is having.

I realize that NYI overpaid.... but after trading away futures - what else could they do? too much for too little, especially when Vancouver's back front was against the wall.
