As much as I liked McCabe and loved O'Reilly when each was in Buffalo, I think that ship has sailed with neither the players nor the team likely interested in a reunion. With O'Reilly, it also seems even more unlikely given the rumors at the time that the Owners were the ones pushing to get rid of him after his "lose the love of the game" comments.
Adams has said repeatedly that he won't add any rentals and rightly so, the Sabres are not in win-now mode yet so forget about Schenn - he'll likely be a depth piece by a contender, very likely Tampa again.
My hunch is that any trade for defense that Adams makes will be the 'under-the-radar' type move for bolstering the 3rd pair. Think someone like Foote or possibly Fabbro, both of whom are 24, fitting the "we want players that can grow with us" model Adams has been advocating and would be upgrades over the Bryson / Lyubushkin / Clague options. Both are also RFAs this summer so the Sabres would retain their rights and be able to either re-sign either if there's a fit or trade their rights if there isn't. Fabbro is a mobile, two-way defender suited for a 3RHD spot while Foote would add the size and defensive focus also needed.
