Honestly what would your players think if they saw your GM actively going out and helping other teams make winning moves when they are just outside of the playoffs after god knows how many years of suffering.

not saying the sabres should be going all in trading everything, but they should be adding depth pieces to improve the team and get into the playoffs, kind of like what the rangers did last year. don’t need to make a home run swing, but reward the guys who have fought to bring you to this point with some reinforcements

Got a pretty good idea what they won't be doing.
Actually those deals make a lot of sense for the Sabres, and maybe more similar ideas.
A RHD with an expiring contract for FC.
@bagelbob take the picks from those trades and use them for depth players.
The Carolina game should be imprinted on every one of how poorly a playoff series against the Canes or Bruins will end.
Why throw away future assets to
JUST make the playoffs?
Jeramiah Crowe performs voodoo magic every year.
In two years the players he drafts will have more intrinsic value than the pick used to draft them.
What GM would want this years 34th OA instead of Peterka or this years 28th OA over Kulich for examples?
Spending draft or prospect capital to get into the first round and be embarassed is not a wise use of assets.
Making these trades then adding other players for FC or these picks would be a good move.
So I like the proposed TDL featured here. it make sense for the future, because that is where this will team excell, in the future.
EDIT:
This would be a nice trade:

Harris, Jordan [RFA Rights]
Hoffman, Mike
2023 4th round pick (PIT)
2023 5th round pick (CGY)
Add a vet, young d-man and some picks.
All wrapped up in one deal!
