I honestly think going from Clifton to Severson is a downgrade.

Sure Severson will give you more offensively, but he gives up far more than Clifton defensively, and that trade-off isn't really worth it when you already have Lindholm, Grzelyck, and McAvoy and are giving up a 1st rounder to do it.

Severson actually has excellent defensive underlyings

No he doesn't. He's not a liability, but he's not good defensively.

I do that every day of the week and then some. Love Clifton. It would be great to bring him to his home team and make a defensive upgrade going to the playoffs

Hard to say no to this if you’re NJ, despite the downgrade

Devils are probably not sellers at deadline. And in the small chance we move Severson, I doubt it would be for a pick.

Severson is a good player, just doesn’t fit with NJ right now. Every NJ fan I see says he sucks but doesn’t want to move him. He’s asked for a trade, makes too much money to be extracted or on the 3rd pair, I’m sure he’ll be gone

I want them to trade him. I am completely fine going into the playoffs running Hamilton Siegs, Graves Marino, Hughes Nemec with Bahl, Smith, or Nikita as depth in case of injury. GET THAT FIRST, use it in a deal to get a Timo Meier. and getting clifton as well, if you think hughes or nemec isnt ready you can stick him on the third pairing.

Idk where he even fits on a playoff roster if Hughes and Nemec are ready come playoff time

Is adding a pick worth taking a down grade for playoffs? Is it worth burning 2 years of Nemec ELC?

Nothing in this response is accurate.

1. NJD fans aren’t saying he sucks.

2. He has never asked for a trade.

3. He is making only $4.16 million.

4. He has been getting top-4 minutes all season and has gotten more minutes than anyone on team over last couple of months.

Nemec's ELC has already started regardless hasn't it?

His ELC has the ability to slide this season and next.
Would make a ton of sense from the Devils perspective to let that happen given that they're gonna be right up against the cap for the rest of the 20s as they're contending.

Ahh okay, In that case I'd keep severson for the year if you can still get 3 years of NHL play on Nemec's ELC.
What are the implications contract wise of bringing Nemec and Hughes up for the end of the season/playoffs, as I've seen an article saying thats what the devils plan to do with Luke when michigans season is done
But honestly in this case i'd be more than riding with Clifton on the 3rd pairing if it means we get another asset to help us get a star like Meier

With Nemec it's fairly straightforward, as long as he doesn't play more than 9 regular season games in either this or next season his ELC slides both years.
I think playoff games are exempted from this but at the moment I'd think there's at least three guys in the organization better suited to playoff hockey than Nemec.

As for Luke I'm not entirely sure, but the way I understand it is that since he'd still be 19 if signing his ELC when the NCAA season is over but the NHL season is still going (whether still regular season or playoffs), his ELC should be ok to slide until the 23/24 season, provided that he doesn't play more than 9 games in the regular season.

If the Bruins would deal a 1st along with Clifton for Severson the Devils should 100% do it.
Clifton would not be that much of a downgrade from Severson and, as you say, that extra pick could be moved for a big acquisition but I wouldn't mind the Devils just using that pick in what's looking like one of the strongest draft classes this century.
