Do you really think that Adams would give Meier $9M with Thompson and Cozens (likely) only at $7M, nevermind that Adams will probably try to get Dahlin extended in the $9M range? I don't think so - which is why, despite all of the obvious reasons regarding talent and skill that adding Meier brings, it will seem too dangerous for Adams IMO - at least, at the deadline. Things may be different once the Sabres have Cozens, Dahlin and Power all locked up.

Yes it could become hectic a few years down the road with the Cap. But Cozens is really the only long-term that would kick in out of those 3. Buffalo should have enough ELC's and 1st contracts over the next 4 or 5yrs to handle it.

The Thompson deal is a steal. Cozens, Meier, Dahlin, and Power will all make more than him. You can't take this approach.
There's plenty of cap space for all of them too. The players you risk eventually losing by doing this are guys like Quinn and Peterka. But if you can get at least one of those two on a bridge until Skinner is gone then you're good. Good teams eventually lose middle-six wingers to Cap constraints, that's just the way of the NHL.

Not really when you consider that Meier's $9M deal would be in place when the final year of Dahlin's and Power's contracts occur. While some have suggested Power will get a bridge deal, I doubt it - he's proven already that he will be a dominant force and the Sabres will therefore probably try to lock him up for as long as possible. Whether he wins the Norris or not, I also think it's a no-brainer for Adams to get Dahlin secured ASAP. Both of those players can be extended July 1st in advance of their final years - and I think the Sabres will make that a focus this summer. The problem is the sequence of things - if Meier is extended before the other two, it handcuffs Adams in negotiations for his own players where each could point to Meier's salary for comparison. Without Meier's extension, the negotiations can then resort to league averages and comparables.

The negotiations are always going to be league averages and comparables first and foremost. You don't compare apples to oranges. There's plenty of space to lock Dahlin up at 10-11M AAV and Power at 8M AAV for 8 years each.

Yes but comparisons to the internal salaries on the team also get factored in.
