Description
With the All-Star break soon to be upon us, the Seattle Kraken are firmly in the playoff picture, a massive improvement from their inaugural season. The roster is quite deep and gets contributions from everyone, but with the trade deadline approaching it might be worthwhile to take a look at some ways the team can improve for both the present and future.

The Kraken are a very solid and well put-together group, and I don't really expect any major shakeups. But I think some added defense and goaltending depth would be beneficial as the team pushes for the playoffs. Below are some ideas to add in those areas. I think this is probably more movement than what ends up happening but I wanted to see how these ideas of mine would look in practice.

As always, constructive feedback is appreciated. Cheers and Go Kraken!

1.
SEA
  1. McCabe, Jake
Détails additionnels:
As of this writing, McCabe has 14 points in 45 games with an average TOI of 19:20 per game and a +2 rating. He is a defensively responsible and versatile blueliner who has continued to put up good numbers this season despite the team around him, and has the added bonus of being under contract for the next couple of seasons at a reasonable rate. I think he would be a great add to help bolster the Kraken defense for both the short and medium term future.
CHI
  1. Donskoi, Joonas
  2. Choix de 2e ronde en 2023 (TOR)
  3. Choix de 2e ronde en 2024 (SEA)
Détails additionnels:
Chicago is apparently asking for a B-level prospect and a 2nd round pick in exchange for McCabe. Seattle is a new franchise and thus a little shallow when it comes to prospects at the moment, so I included two second round picks as a rough equivalent. If Chicago really wanted a prospect in return one of the picks could be swapped out for an equivalent value prospect.

Donskoi is included just to make the math work with his $3.9M expiring cap hit nearly equal to McCabe's. Unfortunately it has been reported he won't be playing this season due to lingering concussion effects; I'm hoping for the best for his long-term health, regardless of whether his playing career resumes or not.
2.
SEA
  1. Smith, Ty
  2. Choix de 3e ronde en 2023 (NJD)
Détails additionnels:
Admittedly this is probably the least likely trade idea I came up with to actually come to fruition. I think Seattle will end up just keeping Soucy as an own rental, but if they acquire a surefire defensive upgrade to supplant him it might be worth seeing what value he could return in a trade. Smith is a waiver-exempt young LD who could provide quality defensive depth for Seattle, something they could use more of as a second year franchise.
PIT
  1. Soucy, Carson (1 375 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
Carson Soucy as of this writing has 9 points in 49 games with a +13 rating in 16:15 average TOI. Pittsburgh could use some defensive changes and Soucy is a solid LD who can bolster their blue line and makes any team better whenever he's on the ice, although he will take unnecessary penalties from time to time. In this mock trade Seattle retains half his salary to help make the money work for the Penguins.
3.
SEA
  1. Korpisalo, Joonas
Détails additionnels:
As of this writing Korpisalo has a .907 Sv% and 3.32 GAA in 22 games started. He would fold into a goalie rotation with Grubauer and Jones and hopefully provide some added depth and consistency. Columbus meanwhile adds another 2023 draft pick.
CBJ
  1. Choix de 3e ronde en 2023 (NJD)
4.
SEA
  1. Portillo, Erik [Liste de réserve]
Détails additionnels:
This one is more future oriented, and I can only see it coming to fruition if Seattle is confident they can sign Portillo or can work something out beforehand. But as a newer franchise they are short on goalie prospects, and adding someone like Portillo to the goaltending pipeline for the future may prove to be a wise move.

If Donskoi is done for the season, just put him on LTIR. Otherwise, Seattle will probably have to pay to move his contract. It might not take much, but it will still cost something.

Hawks probably accept. Taking back Donstoi til the end of the season doesn't really bother me. Good analysis on the trade too

I don't think the Pens are taking that. We just aquired Smith this offseason, and I'd love to have him getting NHL time. He's more deserving of it than Dumo has been as of late.
The trade essentially translates to John Marino for Carson Soucy @ 50% retention. I was more bullish on Marino than most Pens fans, so take it with a grain of salt, but I don't think I would have done that even before Marino took a massive step forward in New Jersey.

Donskoi doesn't REALLY bother me either. My only qualm is that, if he is done for the season, then the excuse of him "needing to be moved for cap purposes" doesn't make sense. And if he isn't even gonna play any games for CHI, why would CHI want to pay the rest of his salary? CHI definitely isn't trying to create an LTIR salary pool for any reason. I guess if CHI sells off enough players they might need the salary to make sure they are over the cap floor for the rest of the season. In that case, they could just put him on regular IR.

Pens say no. Soucy is not a solid LD, teams play is picking up his terrible play. I've been at the majority of Kraken home games this year, i'll keep the third and smith thanks.
