Description
I am ranking prospects by position and tier. Position is filled out in the team ranked from best to worst.

Decided to do this after seeing Josh Filmon continuing to tear it up in the entire CHL. He looks to be yet ANOTHER late round steal. I must say, it’s exciting to see how well the Devils have done over the past 5 or so years in rounds 5 and 6 specifically. I give a lot of credit to Paul Castron, Tom Fitzgerald, and the rest of the scouting staff because they have been doing a great job..

Strengths: well it is obviously on both sides of the Defense. Headlined by Luke Hughes and Simon Nemec, we also have former 1st round pick Shakir Mukhammaduhlin, 2nd round pick Seamus Casey, 6th round Pick Topias Vilen, and 3 guys on the verge of the NHL in Walsh, Bahl and Ohotiyuk. This has to be a top 3 defensive prospect core.

Weakness: center. A center prospect core that graduated 2 incredible 1st round picks put the need of center further down the organizational needs chart. With the strength of the Devils other positions, I feel this is the position that will namely be targeted in the 23 draft. Samu Salminen leads the depth chart but doesn’t project as anything more than a top 9 center. He’s young and may still have a glimor of top 6 potential but we shall see.

|Tiers|

Untouchables:

L.Hughes: it’s pretty obvious why he is a complete untouchable for the devils organization. Outside the fact that he is brothers with the best player on the team, the kid all around looks like he can be just as good, if not better than both Jack and Quinn.

Simon Nemec: you don’t trade a former 2nd OA a year after you draft him. You ESPECIALLY don’t do it to a kid that has been touted as possibly being the next Victor Hedman. Whether he becomes that or not, the potential is there and he is to valuable to trade in any deal. The Devils envision their future blue line to be anchored by both Nemec and L. Hughes. This kid is going nowhere.

A tier: players that the organization value very highly and won’t move easily

Seamus Casey: has had a beauty of a season with the Michigan Wolverines and has even played as their top line center. The kid is insanely creative, has silky hands, and has an incredible IQ. IMO Casey is about as close to untouchable as they come.

Alex Holtz: still only 21 years old, the 7th OA pick has had his struggles. His perceived value may have dropped but I don’t believe the organization values him any less which is why he is towards the top of this tier. The kid has an incredible shot and great IQ. The thing holding him back is his skating. Regardless he is still very young and I think the Devils will do anything they can to avoid moving him.

Arseni Gritsyuk: Might be the Devils best forward prospect. Kid has been on fire in the KHL. (I think he has like 20pts in his last 21) he’s got a monster shot and a knack for the net. I love this kid and he should be coming over to NA after the KHl season is done. He has a very good chance of making the team next year out of training camp.

Shakir Mukhammaduhlin: great Hockey name and a great hockey player. Has been playing the KHL the past 3 years and has been a mainstay. Officially coming to NA after the KHL season is over. Former 1st round pick I believe the organization still values him very highly.

B Tier: Organization still value very highly but would consider moving more than the others.

Fabian Zetterlund: has been a mainstay with the Devils this season and has looked pretty good for the most part. Strong begin but has fizzled out lately. I think the team likes him as a cheap bottom 6 player to help fill out their roster though I do question if he has much top 6 potential.

Akira Schmid: the Devils best goalie prospect. He looked great in his call up earlier this season and has a real shot of becoming the backup next year.

Josh Filmon: Last years 6th round pick has already proven he was an absolute steal. 32 goals in 39 games and 8th in scoring in the entire CHL. If he is traded this deadline, he is a center piece prospect without question. If he can fill out his frame more, there is 100% top 6 potential in this kid.

Topias Vilen: Another 6th round steal like Filmon, Vilen has been incredible in Liiga and played the most minutes in the entire WJC for Finland.

Kevin Bahl: The Devils love his size at 6’7 but his development into the big club has been very iffy. If he can figure out how to use his body more and get more physical, he is the 3LD the Devils want.

Nikita Ohotiyuk: solid 2way guy that has struggled with the big club this year. Still some bottom 4 potential from him that I think the organization sees.

Reilly Walsh: I solid RD prospect who just hasn’t gotten a chance with the big club. I think he really needs a change of scenery. I think he is an excellent target for any club looking for a young RD with some decent potential.

Nico Daws: Daws was the guy last year that excelled with the big club. While he’s going to the AHL all star game, it seems the Devils value Schmid a bit higher.

Nolan Foote: Coming back from the Blake Coleman deal, Foote was supposed to be a middle 6 power forward the team still needs now. His development has not gone the way we would have liked but I do think there is an NHLer in him. I could see him being the 4LW next season if the tea, moves on from Miles Wood, though I also wouldn’t be surprised if he was shipped off.

Tier C: Organization likes them but would have no issue moving them either.

good stuff

When it comes to Holtz I think his skating has become adequate, besides his great shot he also has underrated playmaking ability but
he just looks absolutely lost when he is in his own zone and cant seem to win a boardbattle in the offensive zone.
Thats why I would not agree on him having good hockey IQ, because thats what seems to me is what is keeping him out of the lineup..

Holtz just looks really uncomfortable in Ruff's system. When Ruff talks about his "speed", I think he's more referring to him slowing down play with his slow decision making and such, rather than his literal foot speed. He seems about as fast as guys like Haula and Tatar who Ruff loves, but they play well in his system.

As for the prospect rankings, I'd put Clarke in B and move Gritsyuk down to B. Gritsyuk may be one of the better forwards in the pool, but him likely re-signing in the KHL for another season or two probably makes him a bit of a long-shot to play NHL games.

Casey is a real boom-or-bust for me. 5'9" defencemen that plays like a Rover is a fun player to watch and was definitely worth the pick at #46, but it's going to be a hard game to make work in the NHL. Also, that game he played as the 1C was against a bunch of highschoolers in an exhibition game, not really anything relevant.

Here is how I would see it. Tier 1 to become top-6 forwards or top-4 dmen. Tier 2 to be middle six, middle pair. Tier 3 will be NHLers. Tier 4 are org depth guys. Tier 5 long shots and no shots.

Tier 1: Hughes, Nemec, Holtz

Tier 2: Gritsyuk, Mukhamadullin, Casey, Zetterlund, Filmon

Tier 3: Bahl, Foote, Walsh, Thompson, Clarke, Okhotiuk, Vilen, Salminen

Tier 4: Hauser, Edwards, Bardakov , Stillman, McCarthy

Tier 5: Moynihan, Vukojevic, Leddy, Hurtig, Orlov, Schlaine, Halonen, Dugan, Talvitie, Pytlik, Zaitsev, Pasic, Popuguyev

I believe Gritsyuk said earlier this season that he talks to Devils regularly and would like to sign after this year. Also said he was willing to play in AHL. There was an interview conducted in Russian that was bouncing around.

"“Little bit different there,” MacKinnon said. “Was rookie of the year last year in the KHL, smaller, skilled player. The thinking right now is that it can really benefit him, as a scoring forward, to continue to mature over there. Maybe spend another year or two. And we’ve seen that with guys like Kirill Kaprizov and Andrei Kuzmenkov. For that type of player, sometimes it’s better for them to mature, then step right into your NHL roster. Probably not coming over right away.”"

From Dan MacKinnon.

Interesting, thanks. Hadn’t seen that.

The problem with keeping guys in KHL is that those teams often stop developing these players the moment they announce they will leave for North America. For instance, when Kirill Marchenko announced he wasn’t extending for SKA, his playing time fell off a cliff.

So even if they want to bring Gritsyuk over soon, this year or next, I imagine that would say they want him developing in Russia so they don’t give him the Marchenko treatment.

(Or maybe they just trade him)
