Mayfield will return a 1st and a 3rd by himself + an RD is the Senators biggest need (he's extended here). Dufour has the value of a late 1st, so essentially three 1st rounders in value for DeBrincat, it's more than they paid for him... this scenario is if they can't come to an agreement by TDL.

Mayfield may return a late 1st and a 3rd if teams are desperate but there are lots of options for cheap decent defense this year (Schenn, Braun, Maatta retained, Holden, Shattenkirk retained, Gavrikov retained, Gudas retained, Stecher, Kulikov, Walman, Tinordi, etc), so I would say it's pretty unlikely that happens.

Dufour looked solid in the Q but really hasn't been that great in the AHL so far. I would not pay a 1st for him personally, but lets say someone would for arguments sake

To summarize that would be at most 2 late 1st's and a mid/late 1st vs 7th OA, an early 2nd, and a 3rd. Gonna have to disagree with you here.

It's almost like Cat @ 6M is worth less than Cat @ 8-9M and 1 year older. Wauw.

Ok explain to me why (outside of him requesting a trade) Ottawa would consider trading a ppg elite winger for a pending UFA as one of the main pieces going back? This trade makes zero sense for the Sens, they can just sign Mayfield in the offseason

mayfield is too old to be a main piece for Cat, at 30 (will be 31 at start of next season) for a 25 YO top line winger is a bad trade.

Ottawa can’t just attract and sign any UFA they want. Trade and sign is a good option for them to secure a top 4RD for next year. And yes, Cat is worth less at $9M vs $6.4M cap hit. That’s pretty basic economics.

this isn't my proposal but Cat isn't ppg nor elite. He's really good, forces turnovers, doesn't drive possession on his own, if you need him @6M that's fair but OTT needs way more than a 8-9M very good scoring winger. Dufour is a very decent prospect, OTT needs D and netminder prospects more, but wingers just aren't that valuable.

Thats quite a reach, Mayfield is just as likely to want to go elsewhere if he's traded there or not.

I like the pieces coming to Colorado, but I can't see the Avs moving Johnson. He's just too big a part of the team, even if he's not what he used to be.

I'm also not sure how they make the cap work next season, unless they're willing to move on from Girard or Toews (and I'm not sure they are).

It’s a trade and sign with extension. Please learn how to read.

The player has to agree to an extension with his new team after the trade, he is still acquired by Ottawa as a pending UFA in this scenario and then signed to an extension by the Senators. Considering they aren't making the playoffs why would they not rather keep their star winger and then sign Mayfield or another defenseman in the offseason. Please learn to think logically

Wow you have literally zero clue what you are talking about. Which is hilarious because of how condescending you are being. Players don't get traded pre-signed to contracts unless they are Matthew Tkachuk. That's it, he is literally the only sign-and-trade in the entire cap era of NHL history. So no, he does not come with an extension. He comes unsigned then hypotheically in this specific ACGM signs an extension with the Senators after the trade. Just like every other extended pending UFA trade-and-sign.

Now explain to me why Ottawa, a team that is not trying to rebuild, would make this trade?
