next year according to Russo

Description
I'm not a Russo die-hard, so this isn't necessarily a depiction of what I want/think. It's just meant to be an aggregation of the things he's been vocal about. So, if you believe Russo, the following are plausible/likely:

1) Wild will move on from Greenway (he seems to lean towards that happening this year)
2) Has speculated on multiple occasions that Addison may be dealt this offseason
3) Dumba not re-signed
4) Gaudreau definitely re-signed
5) Duhaime/Shaw re-signed (not sure I've heard him really indicate one way or the other with Shaw, but taking a liberty there).
6) Gus re-signed
7) Goose. Honestly not sure. Don't know if Russo has said much here beyond the obvious (i.e. "at this point he hasn't requested a trade).

Dollar figures/term are just a best guess.

What returns/moves would you be looking for re: Greenway and Addison?

Would love to get both of those guys to help Vancouver. Not sure what would work for Minnesota. Could do Rathbone/Bear and Boeser 50% retained imo. Not sure if you guys want to risk it for the Boeser biscuit and Bear is supposedly looking for 1-2 yr 2m salary so probably too much for ya or hopefully Allvin and Rutherford get their butts in gear and start making moves.

If Addison is moved, that would be a bad move, he's their future PPQB and he's already shown flashes of it this season. The last thing this team should be doing is moving their youngest NHL caliber player in the D position away.

I read the Addison speculation too but I don’t buy it, especially if you move on from Goose (which I think they would like to do). I can’t see his bridge being more than $3 mil and I anticipate a good bit less than that.

Only way I’m moving him is for a similar aged top 9 C or top 6 W. I also don’t buy Freddy getting more than $1.5, he’s a bottom 6 forward. I really think he’s gone.

I honestly don't know what to expect at this point. You have a GM that loves size and physicality, so running a right side of Spurgeon-Addison-Faber doesn't seem like his first choice (assuming Faber is NHL ready next year and not in Iowa). And then you have a coach citing defensive concerns with Addison, plus a beat writer suggesting they may look to deal him.

It's not my first instinct to move Addison either, but just reading the room as a fan, I guess I wouldn't be shocked if that one comes true.

I think if Addison moves, we’ll be OK with the return. I’m suspect of Russo’s speculation on this because he keeps bringing up Spacek. From what I’ve seen, he’ll be a Merrill type player. Not to mention he’s at least 2 years away. That is absolutely not a reason to move on from a guy that’s QBing PP1 for a physical guy.

I think there’s too much focus on the size when you have a talent level like Addison’s. We don’t talk nearly enough about how bad the forwards have been on defense and how that’s being misconstrued as size.

Go!igoski is a hockey bro. I'm sure he's a well-liked and nice dude, but he's there to collect a check and have a good time, and being nice and well-liked isn't exactly leadership. No interest in him returning to AZ. I'm sure he doesn't care about being an eternal scratch in the NHL. I don't know what he'd do if you demoted him though.

Yeah the Spacek stuff is weird, he keeps referencing that. Like obviously he’s a fine prospect, but he’s acting like the guy is knocking on the door. I think he just likes his dad tbh lol.

I agree re: the Addison stuff. I just think Guerin likes size. Trading for Midds, D Lo and Reaves. May not spill over into Addison, just trying to point out his tendencies

Yeah that was purely just a placeholder to communicate thoughts on him. CF doesn’t let you submit trades without a team selected, so AZ had nothing to do with it.

More just observations that his situation needs to be addressed somehow

Two year deal with a NMC is still a head-scratcher to me.

@Pompadour_de_Armstrong I’m fairly certain this was part of the deal when he signed his 1 year at $5 mil deal to play cap shinaegins when the buyouts hit. Basically a gentleman’s agreement between the Goose and BG, this was always the plan.

He traded for Addison?

All Russo has said about Addison is IF he asks for too much he COULD be traded. I would hardly call that speculation about trading him considering we have no clue what he's asking for, if those talks have even started yet.

I take a different view of the trades. If you look at what we spent last deadline (2nd, 3rd, 5th, and Kaapo) vs. what we got back (Flower long term, Midds long term, and D Lo), that’s a great ROI. Even if Midds was smaller, he’s a decent value. I also think the cost of Reaves was so small that it doesn’t matter. But D Lo and Reaves are really just hype men, the size wasn’t the important part.

And I’d bet you dollars BG values Addison a lot, even if Dean doesn’t. From what I’ve heard him say, he knows that talent, not size, wins games. He‘s just been smart to pay a couple pennies here and there to keep the team in the hunt, which means hype guys like D Lo and Reaves.

I don’t care to go dig up old Worst Seats episodes, but he has 100% said a fair bit more than just that.

On one of em recently, he even went so far as to say something like “ppl who know me know I don’t just say this type of stuff unless I have it on good authority.” He’s also said stuff like “fans are much higher on him than the FO”.

That doesn’t mean it’s true, but he hasn’t ONLY brought up the contract angle.

Yeah I wasnt saying the ROI was bad. I disagree that DLo and Reaves was purely hype and had nothing to do with size or physicality, but to each their own.

Think he likes Addison too. Just was trying to look at it from different perspectives and play devils advocate a bit on reasons why he may be moved

I've had Addison being gone if he wants more than a $2.5m/yr bridge before the Boldy extension. Now I'm thinking it'll be $2m is the max they'll pay him.

Addison can't be used on the PK. He adds nothing 5v5. He's not big or physical. He's only a slight improvement on the PP over Spurgeon (in a Kap, Boldy, JEE, Zucc setup). The 23 games Before Boldy was called up the PP was hovering around 16%, after Boldy was called up it went 22.9% the rest of the year.

I actually think we agree on all fronts, even D Lo and Reaves. And it’s definitely worth thinking about what Addison would be worth, if there’s one chip we have that could get us a top 6 C, it’s him.

I’m just fascinated by what the deadline will look like. Can we get another1st? Will Marco be back up? Will Dumba move and Addy takes that spot? I honestly think the healthiest place for this team to be at the a week before the standings is a couple points out of the WC and and 2 teams back. It would force them to decide on Steel/Hartman/Freddy and capitalize on their highest value and we’d get to see if Addy can play top 4 and If Marco is for real.

Russo is overblowing his contract demands. UFA 3rd pair PP specialists make 3-4, he can ask for that but the Wild have the RFA hammer. He skates too well and sees the ice at such a high level that the top 4 potential is right there, you don’t give up on that because he’s small. As an offensive D, he needs to tighten up his rush D (which is dependent on IQ and skating, both pluses for him) and that can be taught. I don’t care if he can clear the net front or not.

He’ll get 2-2.5 and that’s plenty fair for all involved.

I think they need to be 6-8 points out before Guerin really considers selling, with Feb's schedule this is entirely possible. I think if they are within a couple of points he just stands pat and hopes for the best.

I don't think Freddy G signs a cheap (team friendly) deal. He'll end up with 35-40p again this year and really needs to cash in on his only chance at a decent payday. I also don't think he's worth MN paying him with their cap situation.

Agreed on the Freddy front, this is his last contract and he’s proven to be a trustworthy bottom 6er that can (not should) play in the top 6. He’s gonna get 2.5 mil with term somewhere and he’s worked hard for it.

But if they’re truly out of it, I think they trade one of Steel/Hartman. Both have value in their own ways and I think it makes sense to give at least one of those guys in IA a test run to see what you’ve got in them.

I don't think so. He's on pace for what 40p+ this year (almost all on the PP), and putting up points gets d-men paid. He can skate but has 0 d-zone awareness and is constantly out of position. He doesn't even add to the 5v5 (4p in 46 games) scoring to offset his bad d-zone play.

MN is looking to have only 2 top-4 quality d-men (Brodin and Spurgeon) next season, they can't afford to have a sheltered pp specialist. The days of Brodin, Scandella, Spurgeon, and Suter are long gone that could support a specialist.

You’re not wrong, but I’ve got more faith in Addison that he can play bigger minutes. Your point about 5v5 points is what’s gonna keep his number down IMO. Unless you get a can’t miss C at a similar age, I think you have to leverage him in top 4 minutes to see what he’s capable of. Worst case is you keep him for another year and ship him off for a late 1st next year.

Walker is the only one that looks even close to NHL ready. If they trade their players they'll be taking back a cap dump, or even just take a cap dump due to their cap and fill out the roster that way. Shaw is sitting in the pressbox so he's the first promotion. Walker should be the 2nd. The rest can stay in Iowa.

I think Foligno should be moved too. He's my favorite player, but if they are out of contention then he's of more value as a rental + 1 to another team than he is as a rental for MN next year. I don;t see next year's tam being any better than this current team without cutting away all the fat.

So, I don’t disagree with you here, but would love to keep Foligno at 2ish on his next deal as a 4th liner. I think the GREEF line and the fact we’re using a top 9 line to stop goals rather than score them is the real reasons we don’t win in the playoffs. Trade greenway, move Foligno to the 4th line, and get some more skilled players with Ek.

And no offense to Shaw, but I don’t care about him. He’s a classic tweener that’s earning his payday but takes an absurd amount of penalties in the TOI he’s given. He also can’t play higher than the 4th line.

I think you can fill Addison's spot with one of the ELC d-men and improve 5v5. I don't see the PP taking a much hit without him either.

Addison is not going to bring in a can't miss center prospect. He'll be 23 soon, so he's not really young anymore either.
