Detroit are not trading for Horvat, it makes ZERO sense.
Trading a first is a move you make when you're RIGHT there to compete for a cup, not just trying to make the playoffs. Drafting and developing is where your stars come from (Seider, Raymond) and if you get lucky, you land a big fish in FA occasionally. Even the FA angle isn't always great, because you're paying for what players have done in the past, not what they WILL do, which further emphasizes the need to hit on drafting and development.
Hopefully Kasper, Edvinsson, Wallinder and Cossa all turn into what we all think they will be and then we're doing pretty well. Then, if you get lucky on guys like Mazur, Hanas, etc, then we're in REALLY good shape.
Trading for and THEN paying a boat load to a guy who is having a career year (during a contract year, at an unsustainable ~22% shooting percentage) and would be in his mid 30s at the end of the contract is not great asset management.
Don't get me wrong, I like Horvat, but as a FA target, not as a trade target. Roll the dice he makes it to UFA and take our shot then, if not, so be it.
