Dumping Marleau was necessary. Anyone with a half a brain would have been able to plan ahead so that he was only given a 2 year contract, but apparently not Lou lol. Without dumping him the Leafs would have been absolutely screwed.
However, it doesn’t change the fact that it cost a fortune and was a bad trade, on its own without context. A first rounder to dump a one year deal is quite ridiculous.
Jarvis isn’t a superstar or anything (and like you said, no guarantees they would have picked him), but you can’t tell me a guy like Jarvis wouldn’t have been very useful considering scoring depth is probably the biggest weakness on this team.
I'm not saying that he wouldn't have been useful, but considering that he's having a sophomore slump and only has 7 goals, I don't think he even has that rookie season if he were part of the Leafs. He would probably be more or less like Robertson in and out of the line up.
Even if he did do well though, the guy was on pace for 20 goals in his rookie season which isn't something out of the question for a lot of middle six players, and of course Jarvis doing it on his ELC would have been great value but it's still isn't enough. So, over these last 3 years since he's been drafted I don't think it makes much of a difference, it's just something that would have been nice (as far as we know).
Let's say he breaks out next season in his contract year, then you're kissing goodbye to him or Nylander or someone anyways. So that's why even in hindsight, I personally would do it again. If Jarvis was scoring around 30 goals though that would be a different story. If he ends up being a superstar after 5 years being drafted, well then it's really just unfortunate but during that time so many players would have been drafted and missed.
