If this trade went through, Timo would be treated as a rental. Rangers don't have the Cap space to give him that extension.
And since rival teams would be aware of that, it's highly unlikely they would put together a competitive trade package before the Draft to acquire him. Since the Rangers have no space, they would simply not offer him a QO, and he would hit the market as a UFA.
I posted a similar idea a little while ago, and even I was hesitant of it. If the Rangers really decided to cut ties with their 1OA, before he even comes off his ELC, I doubt it would be for a rental.
