Probably not something San Jose would want anyway? He's a pending free agent. They can just sign him. Only real reason to trade for his rights is to leverage the 8th year in negotiations, but who the hell is giving him 8 years?

They can trade "future considerations" with a handshake agreement, but they can't contractually obligate New Jersey to send back the players' rights after the season. The Devils could agree to it, then renege later without consequence.

Idk why it wouldn't be. Future Considerations CAN actually become things in the future, I don't see why teams can't come to a similar agreement.

You can't give the 8th year to a pending UFA unless the player was on the team at the prior trade deadline. So if Severson finishes the season with the Devils, New Jersey is the only team that can offer him the 8th year.

It would just be two separate trades. The trade would be Meier for Holtz and a 1st. Then after the season concludes, New Jersey would send Severson's rights to San Jose for "future considerations" or some conditional draft pick that won't be met.

However, there would be nothing binding New Jersey to the obligation to send over Severson's rights. They could just deny the agreement and not send over his rights.

Can’t trade a future transaction with a current asset named. You could agree to future considerations and the have those considerations be Severson UFA rights in offseason for a late
Round pick. Just can’t announce that as the ‘consideration’ formally.

Not necessarily separate deals though. When the Flames traded Theo Fleury they got Rene Corbet, Wade Belak and future considerations. Those considerations later became Robyn Regher and a 2nd, but it's still the same deal. No reason this would be different.

You could also sell players for cash back then. With the 2005 CBA, trade conditions became much more restrictive, and have become even more restrictive since then.

There's no way to allow Severson to finish the season with the Devils and contractually obligate the Devils to send his rights to San Jose at the end of the season in a deadline-day trade. The best you can do is a handshake agreement that the Devils could renege on if they so chose.

Yes, sort of, if left open-ended. As long as the two sides agreed at time, and it fit within CBA rules. It would be called “future considerations” and teams would have to agree at later point on the compensation. But I doubt SJS goes for it, especially when there is plenty of other fruit on the tree.

The closest example that comes to mind….at the 2007 deadline, Nashville was headed to playoffs, Philadelphia was the worst team in league, but still had pretty good young roster (Richards, Gagne, Carter era). They traded Peter Forsberg for a package of items (Upshall, Parent, 1st, 3rd) and then after the season Philadelphia sent back the 1st to Nashville for two free agents (Scott Hartnell, Kimmo Timonen). Both immediately signed extensions with Philadelphia. There was talk about handshake agreements, cap circumvention, etc. But the league ultimately approved since it is was exactly what both teams wanted.

So possible? Yes. Likely? Probably not.

Its not legal. What they're talking about is one trade made before the trade deadline, has a condition that would be a specific player whos rights would remain wtih the devils until the end of the season.
The problem is that once the trade is considered complete, its considered complete.
You could potentially do something like "future considerations" and then have severson's UFA rights be that consideration, but what if seaverson got hurt? SJS would be livid and probably feel like they were screwed.

The rangers had no side deal with TBL before the season ended. They traded for his rights after the season ended when his rights are tradable.
