I made the trade as an offseason move, making the trade for the jets as a trade and sign

Nope. Winnipeg doesn't have the need or cap space for another expensive winger with extensions for Scheifele, Helly and possibly PLD coming up.

Schmidt's bad contract is off the books, and Wheeler's contract would be gone as well; leaving 14.2 million. Add another 6.9 to that with Demelo, and Dillon's contracts expiring. So there is 20 million. They could easily extend Scheifele, PLD, if he stays, and Hellebuyck, with a Meier extension.

And that is based on this year's cap; which will increase by a million next year, and more after that.

But, be wise here.... Don't run into the situation Edmonton & Toronto have with high end contracts with a few guys. Spread the salary throughout the roster, such as Boston... Sorry, as much as I would like Meier on the team, we got to look after our guys that we want first and restock with youth and affordable experience at the right time... Deal with your head and not with your heart in this situation...

My response is exactly that same as @camper27 said below. He laid out the situation perfectly.

A prefect explanation of how Jets management should be thinking.

They would not be, they get two back as labanc and simek would only have one year deals in this scenario

ok but for next season they would be retained out. Grier too smart to do that to himself. Burns is the long term retain. he needs a spot in case he finds a sucker for EK65.

Edmontons problem is that they are paying campbell and nurse around 3 million more than their worth each. If holland made those contracts better, than their depth in turn would be better. Not to mention that the way their defense is built is wrong, with barrie at 4.5. The problem isn't the money, it is the team building.

The simek trade is not as likely to happen, so that one can be taken out

I'm just say most team would always leave 1 open retain spot just in case. Well maybe not Ken Holland but most smart GM's
