Description
We've known since the summer that Lou failed in a big way by not getting this team a legit scorer. In a span of a few months, Johnny Gaudreau, Kevin Fiala, Claude Giroux, Nazem Kadri, Max Pacioretty, David Perron, Ilya Mikheyev, and Andre Burakovsky all changed jerseys. Even if you didn't get the "sexiest" name, there were plenty of improvements we could have made. The Romanov trade hasn't looked great, especially when that pick could have been used on a guy like JT Miller, coupled with firing the third winningest coach in NHL history for no good reason, only to be replaced by his underling clearly over his head (and Lou's company man/lap dog). This team needs to begin a retool with different men in charge.

GM: Kevin Weekes
HC: Bruce Boudreau

The below trades set the Isles up for replenishing the prospect pool and could also use the picks in other trades to more immediately improve the roster. I don't want to trade Sorokin (yet). He is a franchise goalie and I want to see if he extends this summer first. If we retool fast enough, we will need him to have any chance at success. If he won't sign an extension in the summer, then trade him to a team like LA for a haul.

1.
NYI
  1. Firkus, Jagger [Liste de réserve]
  2. Choix de 1e ronde en 2023 (SEA)
  3. Choix de 2e ronde en 2023 (SEA)
Détails additionnels:
Isles get a decent wing prospect who is a few years from making an impact and a pair of draft picks in a deep draft.
SEA
  1. Nelson, Brock
Détails additionnels:
If SEA falls short in landing Horvat, Brock Nelson would be a great consolation prize. He is signed for another two seasons at a bargain $6m
2.
NYI
  1. Foegele, Warren
  2. Choix de 1e ronde en 2023 (EDM)
  3. Choix de 2e ronde en 2024 (EDM)
Détails additionnels:
Using the Savard/Chiarot deals as a benchmark. Mayfield is better and cheaper than both. Isles take back Foegele to increase the return.
EDM
  1. Mayfield, Scott (725 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
EDM needs to make the playoffs and add some size to their roster. Taking Foegele off their hands allows for another move if they want.
3.
NYI
  1. Comrie, Eric
  2. Choix de 2e ronde en 2023 (PHI)
  3. Choix de 2e ronde en 2024 (BUF)
Détails additionnels:
Isles secure more picks and get their backup for 2023-24
BUF
  1. Varlamov, Semyon (2 500 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
I've seen this trade idea floated around a bit recently. I'm not sure Varly waives his NTC for Buffalo, so if not imagine a similar return from New Jersey instead. Sabres need an upgrade in goal for their playoff push. Varly could end his career in Buffalo if he is open to it. I can see them signing him to a 1-2 year extension
4.
NYI
  1. Smith, Craig
  2. Choix de 3e ronde en 2023 (BOS)
  3. Choix de 3e ronde en 2024 (BOS)
Détails additionnels:
Isles maximize value by taking back Craig Smith's salary. BOS already tried waiving him once. This opens up the room for another move or possibly fitting some/all of Bergeron/Krejci 35+ bonuses on this year's cap
BOS
  1. Parise, Zach
Détails additionnels:
Having a fantastic season and deserves a chance at a Cup. Parise would fit in really well in Boston

We’ve waited years for playoffs. What’s another year if we’re that much better off by not paying deadline super premiums. Certainly not our calls but hope Adams sticks to this

as someone else said upthread: Sabres have been stuck at the bottom end of the standings for so long and finally have a solid team. with the amount of depth still percolating in the system, I'd think that rewarding a young team playing above their expectations would be worth a couple of later 2nd rounders (i'd think Buffalo hangs onto the Flyers' 2nd over their own this year, though). Not saying Varly has to be the guy they're getting, but goalie is one area they can supplement easiest - and cheapest, even with TDL premiums. I'd be shocked, and a little bummed, if Buffalo stands pat at the deadline.

Dont be bummed. A ufa free agent goalie rental a waste. If we must supplement we need long term partner for Power and replacement for Bryson. The weakness in our goals and shots against terrible. We need to protect and lighten load on our young goalies. An rfa like Meier would be second and although a luxury he’d be signed long term
As Islanders are listed as your favourite team why would you be bummed?

Brother-in-law is from upstate and he's a big Sabres fan, so now I've got a soft spot for them - I want to see them succeed (except against the Islanders)! It's a great young core with a ton of talent still to come and a couple extra picks to burn in this year's draft. Whether it's Varlamov, Meier, or someone else, it would be great to see them going for it at the deadline instead of another year of packing it in and getting what they can for their pending UFAs. Plus, Kyle Okposo is a great human being and he deserves a chance at getting a good playoff run.

Okposo is an inspiration to many people, led the club to relevancy and will get playoffs next year.
Unless a trade is a long term solution i doubt it’ll happen. Rushing a rebuild a bad idea. Just look at Detroit and Ottawa that tried and failed badly
We have three rookies this year and undoubtedly Kulich,Levi , Savoie and Rosen rookies in next two- three years.
As much as i love Meiers game i wonder if we can afford him with Cozens,Power and Dahlin in line for monster contracts but if forward desired he’d be my pick. It would be an interesting second line with Cozens,Meier and Peterka or Savoie
I think main improvements in forward group should be more 3/4th line toughness and defensive play. We’re scoring at a huge tilt

Varly doesn't move the needle though. And we don't need expensive rentals. UPL is 11-3-0 in the past 14 starts and BUF is .661 since Samuelsson came back from injury (7th in the league) since Nov. 22. We're on the path to the playoffs and even if we don't get there, the future is bright. Going status quo shows just as much confidence in this group than trading for more ammo does. Let them figure it out. And they are doing just that.

A D-man to maybe push Bryson to 7th could work or a top-4 to push Joker to 3rd pairing, but even Bryson isn't that bad. He's 50.0 GF% last 20 team games (after going back to his 3rd pairing abilities). I mean we could use the depth on D in case of injury, but F or G don't really help us.

My concern for the playoffs is always depth - one of the reasons the Islanders went as far as they did in 2020 & 2021 was partially due to the fact that they had two very good goalies ready to go every night - Varlamov, Greiss, & Sorokin all got at least a few games in net during those runs. Craig Anderson is obviously on a load management schedule this year, and while UPL is winning games, his overall numbers (and the small sample size to date) would give me hesitation. And, if last year's playoffs taught us anything, having strong depth in goal is a huge plus (just ask Pittsburgh & Carolina) - again, doesn't have to be Varly, but I think it's an area to supplement the team going forward, along with a potential middle-pair D.

Not huge asks in terms of upgrades, and shouldn't be hugely expensive if the Sabres want to dabble in the deadline market - and personally I think the optics of being buyers at the deadline is going to be incredibly valuable in reinvigorating that fanbase and telling your young core that you believe in them.

Agree or Varly but my personal belief is Bryson and joker not capable defenders and both make it tough on our goalies.
Joker a capable puck carrier that paired with Dahlin or Power looks ok but both incapable of easing logjams in front of goalie so 4.5 million combined that could be better spent
If a goalie acquired might scare off Levi like Portillo but if goalie important think Demko reclamation better solution than Varly but not my desire

Well, that's the thing. If you judge him based purely on numbers, than that's not telling the whole story. He's played better than 11 of the past Gs he faced. BUF plays an up-tempo high scoring game. UPL has been fantastic if you have watched him going toe to toe night after night with basically every G he's been against. And if you watched the BUF-DAL game, then you know how good Anderson still plays, when he plays. Varly, or any other goalie really doesn't help. And as just mentioned above, BUF is trying to make sure Levi is signed.

BUF could use a D or 2 for depth. We have F and G depth.

The goal this year is experience. Adding a Varly does nothing to add to UPL's experience. Just not a good fit. Neither is a F.
