Description
We've known since the summer that Lou failed in a big way by not getting this team a legit scorer. In a span of a few months, Johnny Gaudreau, Kevin Fiala, Claude Giroux, Nazem Kadri, Max Pacioretty, David Perron, Ilya Mikheyev, and Andre Burakovsky all changed jerseys. Even if you didn't get the "sexiest" name, there were plenty of improvements we could have made. The Romanov trade hasn't looked great, especially when that pick could have been used on a guy like JT Miller, coupled with firing the third winningest coach in NHL history for no good reason, only to be replaced by his underling clearly over his head (and Lou's company man/lap dog). This team needs to begin a retool with different men in charge.

GM: Kevin Weekes
HC: Bruce Boudreau

The below trades set the Isles up for replenishing the prospect pool and could also use the picks in other trades to more immediately improve the roster. I don't want to trade Sorokin (yet). He is a franchise goalie and I want to see if he extends this summer first. If we retool fast enough, we will need him to have any chance at success. If he won't sign an extension in the summer, then trade him to a team like LA for a haul.

1.
NYI
  1. Firkus, Jagger [Liste de réserve]
  2. Choix de 1e ronde en 2023 (SEA)
  3. Choix de 2e ronde en 2023 (SEA)
Détails additionnels:
Isles get a decent wing prospect who is a few years from making an impact and a pair of draft picks in a deep draft.
SEA
  1. Nelson, Brock
Détails additionnels:
If SEA falls short in landing Horvat, Brock Nelson would be a great consolation prize. He is signed for another two seasons at a bargain $6m
2.
NYI
  1. Foegele, Warren
  2. Choix de 1e ronde en 2023 (EDM)
  3. Choix de 2e ronde en 2024 (EDM)
Détails additionnels:
Using the Savard/Chiarot deals as a benchmark. Mayfield is better and cheaper than both. Isles take back Foegele to increase the return.
EDM
  1. Mayfield, Scott (725 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
EDM needs to make the playoffs and add some size to their roster. Taking Foegele off their hands allows for another move if they want.
3.
NYI
  1. Comrie, Eric
  2. Choix de 2e ronde en 2023 (PHI)
  3. Choix de 2e ronde en 2024 (BUF)
Détails additionnels:
Isles secure more picks and get their backup for 2023-24
BUF
  1. Varlamov, Semyon (2 500 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
I've seen this trade idea floated around a bit recently. I'm not sure Varly waives his NTC for Buffalo, so if not imagine a similar return from New Jersey instead. Sabres need an upgrade in goal for their playoff push. Varly could end his career in Buffalo if he is open to it. I can see them signing him to a 1-2 year extension
4.
NYI
  1. Smith, Craig
  2. Choix de 3e ronde en 2023 (BOS)
  3. Choix de 3e ronde en 2024 (BOS)
Détails additionnels:
Isles maximize value by taking back Craig Smith's salary. BOS already tried waiving him once. This opens up the room for another move or possibly fitting some/all of Bergeron/Krejci 35+ bonuses on this year's cap
BOS
  1. Parise, Zach
Détails additionnels:
Having a fantastic season and deserves a chance at a Cup. Parise would fit in really well in Boston

I think there is an advantage with Weekes being so tapped in with the other teams around the league. Plus he would be good with the players. I definitely would support Weekes by surrounding him with an experienced front office. I want someone more innovative than the dinosaur we have now

You could wait until July but you won't get a goalie now to help with the playoff push. I think the Sabres are a fun team and that locker room deserves a vote of confidence from the front office. I'm not sure Varly would waive his NTC to go there as I said in the description. I think NJD is a more likely destination.

Mayfield would cost a 1st or a quality prospect. If BUF wants to pay that, step right up lol

I think taking back Smith helps go a long way with that (for of Boston's overages). This is genuinely the Bruins year. They should be doing everything possible for one more cup with this group

Doesn’t that bonus go on the isles cap, as they were all hit with the islanders?

Boston wouldn’t have enough accrued cap space if this is at deadline so it would add to next year. Bruins aren’t accumulating space currently with Debrusk on LTIR

weekes seems like a great guy but the way he talks about the game he is very old schooled - isles need a more modern GM who understands how to draft and develop players

From what I understand the bonuses would go to team he finished season with. I remember Bob McKenzie mentioning this a couple years ago. Not sure if it’s still the case since they change CBA constantly and the revised the +35 contracts recently. I’ll see what I can find on it.

Please do. Logic would tell me if they hit the bonuses with one team, it would be on their cap. We all know the CBA doesn’t always follow logic though

So I didn’t find anything definitive looking at CBA except bonuses are paid as achieved. However, if you do an armchair GM here it shows Boston with 4650000 in bonuses. If you trade for Parise it increases to 5400000. Plus 750000 which would be Parise’s full bonus. Not sure if that’s an accurate representation or not.

THIS! I wouldn't necessarily add a goalie, but IMO this is where we're missing the mark as Sabres fans.

We should invest in the young core. I think some of us Sabres fans are traumatized by the tank > transition > support Eichel era

Lol…. you want TWO 2nd round picks for a RENTAL goalie?!
Gtfoh 🤣🤣🤣
Zero chance that happens- ABSOLUTELY NONE

BTW,
The Sabres have a young goalie breaking into the league who is playing well for us- UPL is 12-5-1
U may look at his save% & think he hasn’t been all that good for us, but that’s due to (mostly) a bad start & a couple random bad games
We might not even be willing to pay ONE 2nd for Varlamov,
let alone 2- which is just plain laughable

UPL is 11-3-0 in his last 14 starts and Anderson is 10th in the league in sv%.

BUF doesn't need a goalie.

All I’m saying is be a little realistic here. Not saying the sabres should be buying rentals but markets are established and teams aren’t selling low to you just bc you aren’t ready to compete for a championship

I’m not proposing the Isles should sell low
I also don’t think Varlamov will go for two 2nds

We’ve waited years for playoffs. What’s another year if we’re that much better off by not paying deadline super premiums. Certainly not our calls but hope Adams sticks to this
