I don’t understand your comment on the Avs/Toews trade. If the value is lower than a 1st, why would the Avs include the 2023 1st? I could see a deal working around a 2024 1st and then a pick coming back to Colorado (bc the Avs don’t have 2nds and 3rds).

For the record, I think that would be an overpay and I’ve never been a big fan of Toews. But if the Avs are looking to fit him in, I don’t think the 2023 1st would be in play.

Basically the only way the Av’s could get into the market for Toews is to include the 2023 first round pick as they don’t have any 2nds or 3rds for the next couple years.

For me the question with this specific Toews to the Av’s trade is how far back are avalanche willing to go for the rental. They have to see themselves going on a deep run again… is a late first round pick (say conference finals) really that much more valuable than a early third?

Whoever they draft in either position is years away from contributing to the roster if at all.

I would even throw in another 3rd or upgrade the pick to tampas 2nd if that helped.

If it starts a a third it needs to have multiple conditions to upgrade. Let’s say 3rd->2nd with a playoff victory and 2nd->1st with two playoff victory’s.

Gleb is a high ceiling prospect. Canes have no reason to move Gardiner. Wouldn’t mind getting McCabe but not for a first and a good prospect.

No, the condition of the Rangers reaching the Western Conference Final stays as is.

Not sure I understand, the condition has not changed as far as the ECF is concerned. If you want to downgrade the pick to a third I would be fine with that but only if it upgrades to a second when if the rangers win a round.

Your argument doesn’t make sense to me because there are intermediaries between a 2nd and a 3rd and a 2023 1st. Namely, a 2024 or 2025 1st.

The problem with the Avs trading for rentals is that they don’t have many good prospects that can graduate. Behrens is their only D prospect, Olausson and Foudy are the only solid forwards (with Kaut/Ranta/Beaucage being meh prospects).

Trading the 2023 1st for a rental means the Avs once again skipping out on an entire draft class. They need to restock the prospect pool so there can be a shot at graduating young players into the NHL to prolong the cup window.

Even if the Avs do want to move high end picks for rentals, I would be surprised if the 2023 is involved.

2023 2nd round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
Upgrades to a first if the rangers make the WCF, the better of the two firsts.

I would argue there are other more efficient ways to supplement the cup window than the draft, namely free agency and trades. The problem with the draft is that it takes such a long time to see results and your organization could be in a completely different place when the prospect is ready to contribute. As I said previously the prospect you draft with your first round pick would be at best 3 years away from the NHL as a full timer.

As it concerns the first round pick in this trade I am actually indifferent to wether it is a 23,24, or 25 first.
