In this post I am proposing the Habs pay a premium return on PLD. Let me clarify my position:

1) I do not believe PLD is going to give up millions of dollars by refusing to consider UFA offers in 2024 by any team but the Canadiens. That would be really foolish and put him personally in a big position of weakness. Look at Gaudreau as an example of this not happening the way the home team expected it to

2) PLD just took a 1 year "bet on himself" contract. There is a huge risk for premium players when they do that. They can have a poor run. They can get injured. They can put themselves in a very bad position so it's typically high risk, high reward. He just did it 1 year and "won his bet", I doubt very much he does it again.

3) If he hits UFA and plays as well as he's played this year, he's going to command 10M in an offseason where the cap is going up significantly. This is the last chance for any team to sign him around 8 - 9M.

He's a great player. He's been surprisingly healthy and consistent while playing a physical game. He's a hometown boy and he wants to play here. Get it done Kent!
