Missing a 1st in the Habs trade, Drouin and Kapanen cancel each other out. That leaves Monahan retained for a bunch of underwhelming picks and McGinn. Swap out all the crap and add the Pens 2023 1st

Please help me understand the hate for this trade.
McGinn PK's, is healthy, is signed until the end of 2025 at a reasonable AVV, comes with 2 seconds as well as a third, and this year has only 4 fewer goals than Monahan has over the past two seasons.
The penguins are losing this trade big time, this year and because of the picks plus that Monahan probably will not sign with them next year in the future as well.
The Canadians should laughing all the way to the bank with this robbery!

We don't need anymore bottom 6 long term players we need to move out contracts to allow for our prospects to get playing time, not bring in more. If the Habs are retaining about 6 mil and bringing in another 6 mil, what's the point?! We aren't getting better, we aren't gaining cap space (we are tying up cap space for an additional year) and we aren't getting any prime assets, so how does this help the Habs? We get another Armia type of player in McGinn and another Dadonov type of player in Kapanen (paid less but still same type of player). Montreal most definitely passes.

Edit*** if you want Monahan with retention it is going to cost at least a 2023 1st. If you want Drouin with retention it will cost a 3rd or 4th. If we have to take back redundant players for cap to work you are going to have to add (maybe the 2 2nds get the contracts dumped for you)

Monahan isn’t getting a 1st. Habs fans are delusional if they truly believe that.

Just like Lehkonen wasn't getting more than a 3rd, 2nd if we are lucky right?! Why do we have to go through this every year? We say our players are worth something, most other fan bases say we are delusional and low and behold most of the time we are right or slightly low on the return.

1st off y’all were trading Lehkonen for multiple 1sts lol. That’s why y’all get ripped on. Y’all are almost never right. Most are usually wrong on here. It’s not just Montreal fans.
Secondly, Lehkonen and Monahan have tons of differences. Lehkonen is a far superior player, younger, much less serious injury history, and a much cheaper cap hit. Not to mention Colorado had every intention to re-sign him cause he was an RFA.
Thinking Monahan is going to net a 1st is like pens fans thinking they could have gotten a first last year for Zucker. And Zucker is the better player yet that was never going to happen.

1. No one had Lehky going for more than a 1st + 3rd or Top prospect + 3rd (which they got)
2. Lehkonen is not even a year younger, puts up less points and plays the less valuable position. Sure he is better defensively but that is it.
3. LMAO, you are a typical, every player is better than Habs players troll. Thinking Zucker is better than Monahan is like saying that Hoffman is better than Crosby

I don't always agree with you, but people saying Lehkonen is a better player than Sean Monahan is ... something
Yes Lehkonen had more value than Sean for various reasons that @hockeyfan1234 mentionned, but one guy have 218 goals 479 points in his career and the other have 94 goals 190 career points
Again, only Dominateurducharme or whatever his name is what trading Lehkonen for Pelletier + 1st + 3rd or Lundkvist + 1st + 3rd
A quarter of Habs fans were asking for a 4th or 5th (the delusional one), a quarter for a 2nd round pick and the rest we wanted team to pay for a 1st or we keep him
Turned out he got more than anyone expected (except the other clown)

On another note, I don't think Monahan & Edmundson, even half retained, will bring a 1st round pick to MTL
Various reason : Monahan injuries, Edmundson play this season

1. They absolutely did and no he didn’t. MTL got a 2nd and prospect for him.
2. Lehkonen was 26 when he was traded. Monahan would be 28. Lehkonen had 29 points at the time of being traded last year. That was more than Monahan had the whole season lol. And that’s with 7 more games played for Monahan. And that’s more than Monahan has this season. And playing wing is a lot more valuable than playing IR.
3. No it isn’t and you’re a typical Habs troll that thinks all your players are better than every other teams and all your players are worth 1st round picks. Yes Zucker is absolutely better than Monahan. That’s why Calgary had to pay Montreal to take him. He didn’t suddenly gain value while mostly on ir.

I mean way to be disingenuous lol. You forgot to mention that the guy with 218 goals and 479 points played 230 more games and also predominantly played his earlier years in the top 6 along with guys like Johnny Gaudreau, Matthew Tkachuk, etc. Lehkonen has played mostly 3rd line with bums compared to Monahan’s teammates lol. I’m living here in the now though. I don’t care what Monahan did 5 years ago. It’s a what have you done for me lately business and Monahan has been hot garbage and that’s why Calgary had to pay to dump him. He’s spent half the season injured this year. He didn’t suddenly gain value. Montreal maybe gets a mid round pick and takes back salary. We already have 1 Jeff Carter. We don’t need another one.
Edit: and just to put things in perspective. Ones on the upswing of his career, the other is on a downswing. This is the first year that Lehkonen has had good players to play with and he is on pace for 65 points this season. Monahan has only had 1 season where he scored more than 64 points.

1. right they got a top prosopect and a 2nd not a top prospect and a 3rd.
2. Boy are you all confused, Lehky played more games, and had 38 points not 29. Also you left out the fact that Monahan had played injured most of the year and needed surgery, but continue to float the narrative however best suits you.
3. LOL, I like Lehky and think we should have kept him so your narrative of me thinking our players are better is just you spewing crap. Zucker is basically Hoffman and neither are better than Monahan, just look how bad the Habs became when Monahan got injured. I am not saying Zucker sucks or anything like that, just that he isn't as good as Monahan. I mean the proof is just looking at their stats. Zucker 167 G, 152 A, 319 P in 590 GP and 0.54 PPG over 12 seasons. Monahan 218 G, 261 A 479 P in 681 GP and 0.74 PPG over 10 seasons. Looks to me like Monahan is clearly the better player.

Yes take the outlier for Lehkonen to use as a comparison, then call the other guy disingenuous lol. Lehky is 27 he isn't all of a sudden going to be a 65 PPY player, Monahan has 7 years over Lehky's previous career high of 31 points and 5 of them are over 55 points. Also at 27, how many more years do you expect Lehky to put up 50+ points? Maybe 4 if he is lucky! Once he gets over 30 he is just as likely to drop off in production as anyone else.

He’s literally on pace for 65 points this year. Maybe you don’t watch hockey outside of the Habs and that’s fine but he’s literally on pace for 65 points. Again he’s on the upswing and Monahan is on the downswing. What Monahan did 3-5 years ago is irrelevant. Especially since all those years were while playing with guys like Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Lindholm, etc. What he’s done recently is relevant and it’s hot garbage, while Lehkonen has been on the upswing the last 2 years. You act like 27 is old. That’s literally the prime of his career. And again, he didn’t get traded at age 27. He got traded at age 26. Monahan also in the prime of his career is coming off multiple hip surgeries and has become a shell of his former self.
You seem to be the master at assuming things and you know what they say about people who assume things?
Sure after 30 he could drop off, but he may not. The thing is, as I’ve said, Monahan has already dropped off at 28. Lehkonen is on an upswing. That’s a huge deal and a major difference.

Like I said this year is the outlier not the norm and until he has 2 or more season at over 50 points you can't say that this is his new norm or that he is on the upswing. It is possible he is but it is also possible that he is just having a career year.

Great now use that same logic for Monahan who has now had multiple straight season of garbage stats. And has progressively gotten worse over the last four years. Now add the fact he makes over 6 million in cap. He’s a massive cap dump. Hence why Calgary had to pay so much to offload him. He’s been injured most of the year and granted his previous injury history too, he hasn’t suddenly gained a lot of value, if any at all.

You aren't getting Monahan without it being a first round pick IMO. Drouin can be had for basically free (not retained). We don't want Kapanen as he has 0 value to us and his contract isn't very good.
