Description
According Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal the Seattle Kraken have been on a constant pre suit of Canucks captain bo horvat. But I highly doubt they Seattle kraken get Horvat viva trade as they are a division rival. The price of horvat is already inflated, so unless Seattle sells a big part of the farm I doubt they get him. But theoretically if Seattle was determined to get him this is what I think a trade could look like.

I'd rather Wennberg, Borgen, Firkus, and a first

That offer would be beat, Canucks already have long term LD with Hughes and Ekman-Larsson they need more RD help than another LD in Dunn. There could be as many as 6-7 teams bidding on Horvat. And that deal is easily at the bottom of that list.

I don’t even think the kraken want or need Horvat.

The Kraken aren't trading Dunn, he's been their best defenseman and a borderline All-Star this season and has been a key part of their success this season. Trading him would negate the improvement adding Horvat would bring.

OEL is likely going to get bought out.

The way Vancouver is heading, It's pretty crazy to waste 8 years of dead money on OEL.

100% this. There's zero need for a rebuilding team to shed cap, especially not at that level - and who knows, maybe OEL has a resurgence. If you went back in time to January 2022 and told this board that Erik Karlsson would be in Norris contention and potentially bringing back multiple 1sts in a trade, you would've been banned for trolling - yet here we are. Worst case is you overpay for bad performance, and what do you care? Not your money!

They're trying to re-tool this within 2years. Whether that's the right call is certainly up for debate but that is what management has indicated since they took over.

OEL and Garland buyouts would clear 11mil in cap space for next season. This organization has shown no signs of long term building so I would bet they are heavily considering that short term space it would create.

The thing is Van has not indicated any desire to rebuild. They want to re-tool in short order. It's similar to the flyers last year. Fans (especially on here) shoot down a lot of ideas because they are "rebuilding" but that is not the actual direction ownership and management are taking. They probably should be rebuilding but it makes more sense to follow what they have said and indicated is their plan which is not a rebuild.

I think that would be even worse - if they're doing a retool, the cap penalty for an OEL buyout is only super helpful the first two years ($146K penalty in 2023-24 and $2.34M in 24-25 before jumping to $4.7M in 25-26/26-27). It's not the end of the world, but it sucks that the worst part of that would kick in when they're probably looking to extend whatever young assets they'd get "retooling"

I think either way it doesn't make sense to send him packing just yet - they've got close to $15M in space this summer with only a few cheap RFAs to extend, and either re-signing or replacing Horvat/Kuzmenko/Schenn. If I'm in charge of the Nucks, I go into next year expecting a top 10 pick and hope my guys out play that, and get myself ready for summer 2024 when I have to extend Petey but will have ~$39M to play with. 2024-25 should be the goal for the 'new' Canucks to debut, if you get what I mean.
