It’s pretty fair value compared to recent high end forward trades

The main reason they're not a perfect comp is that the Wild couldn't afford to pay Fiala so had very little leverage compared to the Sharks. In terms of play and age, they are very comparable. That being said, I don't think the difference between the two is a full player in Sharangovich.

High end forwards heading into RFA...

Buchnevich = Blais, 2nd
Reinhart = late 1st, wildcard prospect
Fiala = mid 1st, top-50 prospect

Which high end forwards got equivalent to Sharangovich, Holtz, 1st?

Even just Holtz + 1st is far too much for a couple of months of Meier.

Only scenario that makes sense is one where Meier has extension...and only time to do that would be after 2023 draft (meaning no deadline deal, no 2023 pick).

I agree, just tired of fighting the 2 pcs part. Shara is not in the discussion.
The friendship with Ecklund makes me think regardless of the pkg Holtz is in it. It's not our 1st in 23, Bahl, Foote yada yada yada

I just don't think Fitzgerald even considers a deal for Meier during the season.
And by summertime, Meier will likely be playing in a new jersey, just not in New Jersey.

Not by that much though, remember Fiala had a fantastic season with the Wild.
Fiala remains a very valid comparable and especially so given that both share less than ideal cap implications.
Fwiw Dom projects Meier's GSVA for 22/23 at 3.5, Fiala's GSVA in 21/22 was 3.6.

So if he's a rental this year. After that he's a ufa correct? I keep referring back to your post a ways back

He will be in the final year of his RFA period, so will have a qualifying offer (1 year, $10 million) between him and UFA. There are a few possibilities here

1. San Jose trades Meier before deadline -- Grier has said that he will not allow other teams to talk extension with Pepe. So, the conventional wisdom is that Meier could be sold at deadline as a rental. They will still likely get some good assets, but the shorter term will limit the return.

2. San Jose elects Arbitration -- At the end of the season, San Jose can elect to take him to arbitration to avoid the QO. But they would need to elect that immediately after the season is over, before the draft. At that point, arbitration can award him a 1-year (and only 1-year) contract, probably worth around $8.5m, which means he will be a UFA in 2024. They could then aim to trade him at 2024 deadline (but if it drags on this long, he will likely want out Id think)

2. San Jose qualifies Meier -- If the team declines to take him to arbitration, the only way they can automatically retain him is with the 1-year, $10 million deal...unless they agree to an extension, which it does not sound like he wants to stay in San Jose. If they chose not to qualify, he can walk as UFA in 2023. This seems like a VERY unlikely option.

4. San Jose trades Meier before or at the draft -- A possibility, but San Jose will have to chance its stance. They will have to elect arbitration before...but if teams will still not have the ability to talk extension with him before hand, teams will not take the risk...so the return would heavily muted. Its possible San Jose will allow bidding teams to talk to Lemieux, which seams like the only way this occurs.

5. San Jose trades Meier after the draft -- Probably the most likely option, especially if the Devils are buying. It will end up being a little like Fiala deal in that the contract will be worked out before trade.

In short, Meier holds all the cards. He will likely end up wherever he wants to play.

Eichel and a 3rd got Tuch, Krebs, 1st and 2nd

Krebs < Holtz

Tuch > Sharangovich

1st = 1st

Extra 2nd.

But realistically I only did this trade to avoid Sharks fans coming in here up in arms over what a ridiculously bad offer this is. I don’t actually think Meier would cost this much. Especially with some reports coming out that he’d cost less that DeBrincat (which I find unlikely but nevertheless)

Eichel had a signed contract, played a premiere position, and better pedigree. He also was coming off injury and had asked for a trade. Hard to make apples-to-apples comparison there.

I think ultimately, it will entirely depend on Meier’s contract extension. If he wants big, big money…or only wants to extend in one place….the trade return will be a lot less (like Mark Stone return) . If he is willing to take a discount…and play for a lot of teams….Sharks could get a haul (like Eichel return).
