Description
Just a rather fanciful dream about the ideal trade deadline scenario.

This is a "quality over quantity" draft strategy: instead of two picks in the 58 to 64 range and one in the 81 to 92 range, the Ducks get one pick in the 26 to 32 range and one pick in the 41 to 48 range. (Basically, we're giving up the Minnesota pick and Klingberg to upgrade the Colorado and Boston picks.) Via other moves, Anaheim picks up the Colorado 2024 first and Washington 2024 second in return for Kulikov and Shattenkirk and some cap relief for other teams.

If only the other teams would cooperate!

If that defense doesn't guarantee a top-3 draft pick, I don't know what would.

Remember, it's all a pipe dream, although I have made an effort to be realistic.

Calgary is going to have anywhere from 4 - 6 million to make an acquisition at the deadline, there is no need to spend to get rid of Lucic when they can just ride out the rest of this deal.

I agree that they don't need to move Lucic if they're only going to make ONE major move at the deadline. I think that they might well do more.

Klingberg doesn't help the Canes. They have Burns. PPQB isn't the issue. It's a system problem, not personnel. And the Ducks are not getting a 1st for Klingberg

I don't disagree on the surface of that argument but when you get into it, I don't know if Calgary has the horses to make multiple moves at the deadline without moving out a Dube, Mangiapane, Kylington, Toffoli, Zadorov type player.

If they make 1 acquisition in the 4-6M range you would have to think a 1st round pick or a top end prospect would be involved? Calgary can only move the 2023 pick because the other two are ladened with conditions from the Monahan trade, if they move a top prospect I think Wolf is the only untouchable so you're looking at Pelletier, Zary, Coronato. Other teams will likely outbid any deal based around those guys. The ability to make a second big splash evaporates pretty quick.

If the Flames were to make a couple moves that would bring in 6M+ in cap hits, who do you think they would target?

So the worst team in the NHL gets Gudas and Lucic, Yeah i don't think so.

And Shattenkirk isn't waiving for no Canadian team, Especially one that's not making the playoffs in Ottawa.

I don't have the Ducks getting a 1st for Klingberg. I have them moving up roughly 24 places at the top end of the draft, which is far, far removed from getting a "pure" 1st. Now you can argue that Klingberg isn't worth even that much, which is your right, but setting up the straw man that Klingberg is getting a first here is an egregious mischaracterization.

Is the team acquiring Klingberg giving up a 1st? Then he is returning a 1st. You can argue Klingberg+, but a mid to late 2nd doesn't hold much value for a team that would be interested in acquiring him. Nothing involving Klingberg and that 3.5 million is worth giving up a 1st right now unless he's coming with like Troy Terry.

Simply my opinion, but:
-Kuli=yes.
-I really, really think the Panthers aren't going to sell. They may end up treading water, but if anything, I seem them looking to add some mid-dman.
-Lucic won't waive, so it's a pointless discussion. I'd like it, but it is what it is.
-If there's a 1st coming for Klinger, that's the type of deal I see, but it won't be the Canes.
-I think I'd want more to eat Zaitsev's deal for the Sens. It's probably fine, and Shatty likely brings back a 3rd at best, but I don't know...maybe add a mid-level prospect?
-I still love the idea of Rico to Colorado. Guy is a gem and deserves to be on a good team.

My feeling is that the ability to make a deal WITHOUT having the other team retain is highly valuable, and makes up for the lack of extensive resources you illustrate.

REALLY big-ticket guys like Kane, Toews and Karlsson are unrealistic, not just for their contract trade restrictions. But you might be after the St. Louis free agents and/or Chychrun and Gostisbehere (both of whom are alleged to be able to play on the right) or Matt Dumba.

I concur that this is all very iffy, hence my Team Title. Thanks for the discussion!

Thanks, pal!!

(I had in my original Team Explanation that Lucic would waive because he wants to learn how to surf, but I thought it a little flippant and anyway, someone could point out that he had that chance when he was with the Kings.)

Oh, I see how your mind works. So if Anaheim trades Klingberg and all three of their second-round picks for Boston's first-round pick, then "Klingberg is bringing back a first."

Gotcha. Now we all know what kind of weight to put on your evaluations.

At that point, the major point of the return is no longer Klingberg. That's not the same. Glad I've gotten to see how your mind works, now I know not to validate your thoughts anymore

If the Canes were going to make any move for Klingberg, it would have happen last deadline or this off-season. There straight up isn’t a need for him anymore. At best, Klingberg and his 3.5mil would be on the 3rd pairing, or just straight up sitting in the press box. If the Canes are going deadline shopping on Ducks players, the most likely candidates would be either Comtois or Vatrano.

By this "logic," Philadelphia trading van Riemsdyk and their first for Toronto's first would be "van Riemsdyk brings back a first" instead of "van Riemsdyk is a cap dump."
