Monahan hasn't played since December 5th with an injury that was only gonna keep him out "2-3 weeks" at the time. Let's get him back on the ice before we start trading him for significant packages.

I know Lebrun just tossed out this idea but it’s ln the caveat that it’s a reasonable ask from Montreal

I don’t see this as reasonable yet , avs really can’t afford moving any prospects who have a shot at being a depth nhler, and foudy is probably the most ready for that role

They really need to be.cautious.

Personally I don’t see the stylistic fit of Monahan and the avs with his lack luckstre skating and really not a 2c and his long extensive injury history, He’s never going to be healthy. Those offseason surgeries didn’t fix his inability to stay healthy

If hes cheap enough their could be a trade there but it’s not one they rush out to make or spend decent assets on

Montreal passes, swap Foudy for Annunen or a 1st and then maybe we consider it. The reason is Montreal is going to have a shot at a much better center in the upcoming draft than Foudy. You aren't going to get a 2nd line center who has had a bounce back year unless you give up significant assets. I don't care if he was traded with a 1st to dump his contract or that his injury has lasted longer than expected, doctors aren't physic they can't exactly predict how long someone might take to recover or predict setbacks or whatever. Their prognosis is just an educated guess based on averages and previous experience sort of like what meteorologists do with the weather forecast. He is reportedly due back next week, when he returns to pre-injury form he will get a good return if we move him.

1....monahan is not a 2nd line Centre
2...hes injury prone and coming off another injury, that is who he is and will always be.
3...lebrun literally qoutes that avs mightbe interested in this if the price was reasonable by montreal, a 1st or annenun is the opposite of that

None of what you have posted aligns to this.

There are two trades to the Avs that keep getting rejected here and would never happen in real life: Horvat for significant assets and Monahan for significant assets. Horvat is worth those assets, Monahan isn't. Horvat will likely return something good although probably not as good as VAN fans would like; Monahan, if anyone even trades for him, might get something halfway decent but he likely isn't returning a 1st. There is no way anyone could look at Monahan's recent past production and his injury history and think, "THAT'S the guy we need and we should pay premium assets to get him!" Now, GM's do dumb stuff in an effort to win Cups so it isn't outside the realm of possibility but the Avs aren't a team that does these sorts of desperation overreach moves. So, while MTL might get some decent assets back, it won't be from the Avs.

You're joking right? this has to be a joke post. No sane NHL fan would categorize a constantly hurt 3rd liner as a second line center commanding significant assets. especially considering he is so bad that your team just required a 1st round pick to even take him on. What on earth has he done this year to prove that somehow his value skyrocketed from "horrible cap dump" to "second line center commanding significant assets"

1. He would be the Av's 2C whether or not you want to admit that.
2. His ppg this year is currently running at .68 and even having missed 19 games so far at that pace he will still finish the year with about 40 points in about 63 games (depending on when this week he returns).
3. Previous trades have very little to do with current value, if that was the case Eichel would only be worth what he got Buffalo, Savard would be worth a 1st + 2nd + 3rd as would Pageau and Tatar would as well. Calgary was in an extremely venerable position and needed to move out cap and couldn't take the same chance as the Habs could that he would regain form like he did. The Habs had the Flames over the barrel and as such took advantage of their situation.

JT Compher is scoring at a 0.59 PPG pace and is much stronger defensively than Monahan. I don't think the difference between those two is enough to spend significant assets to make the upgrade, especially when you consider that the Avs have guys like Gabe Landeskog and Valeri Nichushkin getting closer to coming back.

When everyone's healthy, you have to assume they lineup something like this:
Nichushkin - Mackinnon - Rantanen
Lehkonen - Landeskog - Rodridgues
Newhook - Compher - O'Connor
Cogliano - Helm - Malgin

They really don't need a major upgrade in their top 9, at least not one that will cost the assets Montreal wants for Monahan. Again, we're talking about a team who's only made 6 picks in the last two drafts, and half of those were in the 6th & 7th rounds. They shouldn't be trading guys who could be cheap, useful depth like Foudy for a rental, especially one who basically is only a slight upgrade over their 3C.

Landy is primarily a winger and they could push Lehky or Rodridgues back to the 3rd line by having either him or Monahan on the wing. Why wouldn't they want to upgrade their top 6/9 if they want to defend the title? Trading for guys like Monahan is exactly the type of things contending teams do.

Landy takes faceoffs for the most part when he's on the ice so him being considered a center isn't out of the question. Avs have maybe 5 prospects who in the next couple years will make the team, not to mention they have almost no drafts picks. If they do trade for someone than they would HAVE to be on the team next year to make it worth it for them. I agree Monahan has been good but not this good, the only way a trade like this goes through is at 11:59 pacific time on trade deadline day when a gm panics.

Going back to 2017-18, Landeskog has averaged taking 8.2 faceoffs per game (winning 4.5 of them!) so I think you can get by with him at 2C if you need to.

And I'm not saying the Avs shouldn't be upgrading their forward group to defend their title; just saying that this value isn't good for them. The package the Avs are giving here is in line with what they gave the Habs last year in the Lehkonen trade - with the difference being that Lehkonen was 2 years younger, cost $2M less, had an extra year of team control, and came with none of the injury red flags that Monahan would come with. It just doesn't line up with the moves that they typically make.

I would rather trade for domi than Monahan.
That’s what fans like this are over looking, there are lots of monahan like options at the deadline that don’t need teams bending over backwards to make the cap work with 50% retention or double team retention

Exactly - the Avs have enough versatile forwards that they're not locked into getting a center. Domi fully retained will have a $1.5M cap hit and will probably cost a 3rd, tops. If Montreal wants to take that offer for Monahan, sure, I'd take it - Monahan *is* a better player than Domi, IMO, and the fact that he can play center adds to that - but that's as much as I'd want to go. The Avs have spent a ton of draft capital and have a pretty bare cupboard - hell, Scott Wheeler at the Athletic could only do a top 14 for them this year. They gotta be judicious with what they spend this deadline.

exactly, you get it as a Non avs fan and have been saying the same thing what all avs fans have been all the time. ITs not that they are untouchable prospects or picks is just they cant afford to go all in every year and burn whatever they have left in the asset cupboards.

If they move a 1st, it has to be someone wiht term, they cant afford to burn those on retntals, same goes for any NHL ready prospects, they will need them to fill spots next year bc no contender is serious if 5/6th of their depth is 750k UFA signings. It will be trash for good reason.

They will add, they have all the talent in the world, 3 of the top players in the NHL in Mack Rants and Makar, you have to be serious at the deadlines but they cant try for homerun swings every year.
I would be fine with picking up a Matt Nieto, Jake Walman, and a Domi types and just take a run with what they have.

Simple: Monahan isn't an upgrade. His skating and defense aren't good enough to be considered a difference-maker for the Avs.
