Chiarot had a stronger defensive reputation, was more productive, and (most importantly) didn't carry the injury red flags that Edmundson has.
It's also worth pointing out that if your trade comp for Edmundson is a move that both at the time, and now in hindsight, was absolutely terrible for the team acquiring him, then I think you gotta take a step back and think about that. GMs are going to see what happened to the Panthers this year (gave up a 1st for a rental, got cap crunched and now that 1st might be a lottery pick) and are going to hesitate - remember, these are NHL GMs we're talking about, a group of 32 men who don't need another excuse to *not* make a move that helps their team. The Florida fallout post-Chiarot trade is going to scare a lot of them off, if Edmundson's lackluster play and injury history doesn't first.
