It's a debate as to whether mayfield makes our healthy starting 6 D, not worth a first rounder, but especially not worth that for us.

Well I think he definitely could still crack the top 6-- but I would agree the value isn't there for a 1st round to make the slight upgrade.

-Toronto is a bad target for Mayfield, their top 6 is pretty locked in with decent depth. Obviously, injuries can happen, but I think if you're trying to shop Mayfield there are better teams to pair him with.

-I don't think any team is giving up a higher pick for Beau, even with $1M retention. He's more likely a change-of-scenery type trade - find another team with an underperforming winger in the $4-5M AAV range and make that move.

-Probably fair value? Personally I'd rather just take the 2nd/3rd rounder (depending on how hot the market gets) for Parise and get a prospect in this year's draft then take on a longer-shot prospect like Torgersson.

He might but is it really “definitely”?

Rielly, Gio, Brodie, Liljegren are no debate in.
Holl has been very good this season, led the Leafs in ice time while Rielly was out and is now second. Knows the system, strong on PK, etc. Im not sure he comes out.

Then Sandin has also been very good. I don’t see him coming out of the lineup either. This ones more debatable but he wouldn’t. Heck even Timmins is a debatable one with the way he has played lately.

He might beat out somebody but i don’t think there’s any guarantee he starts in the lineup.

I don't think he cracks the lineup based on higher talent/skill necessarily, more his size & style of play going into playoffs. I like Sandin, but given the choice for THIS postseason, Mayfield is in the lineup. Just my opinion.
I still agree that I'm not prepared to use the 1st round asset to make this happen.

Not sure the isles will be open to trading him, but think I’d burn 2024 1st on Mayfield. His cap hit is minimal (still leaves room to trade for a forward) and he gives a much needed physical element to our blue line. Holl has been good but he’s soft and error prone & I don’t like the idea of starting him vs Tampa; if he is our 7th d come playoffs, we’re in good shape..

2024 1st rounder on our 5/6/7th D is utterly insane. Especially when we have Timmins not even playing when all healthy. Holl may make some errors but also plays the toughest minutes of anyone, of course he might make some mistakes. Has been lights out this year, 2nd biggest minute muncher on the 2nd lowest GA team.

I’d play following pairs:
Reilly Mayfield
Sandin Brodie
Gio Lili
Holl as #7

Team D looks good so far in reg season but also looking like we’re 90% to play Tampa in 1st round. I like Holl, and it’s great to have depth, but he’s just not physical enough. We know playoffs are a different animal.
I don’t care about the cost - trade all our draft picks if needed. But agree we have to target the right players to give us best chance to beat Tampa and then bruins, etc.
I like Mayfield b/c of his cap hit, his physicality and he’s a right shot and correct style to play with reilly.
But if we can get him cheaper 🤞

physicality was not a very significant factor in the loss to Tampa. Luck, and a bit of depth scoring and a bit of goaltending issues were factors. Common Leafs talk buzz word, but wasn't really an issue.

What REALLY makes Mayfield all that big an upgrade to Holl? It's a marginal upgrade at best (some may argue no upgrade at all). And we have a 7th D with 10 points in 13 game while being fine defensively, I think that'll do.

I watched the series too; not blaming loss on lack of physical play - it was super close and if not for a blown call or lucky bounce … but we had Muzz playing great last year. Tampa D makes it real hard to get to net; refs don’t call blatant penalties now never mind the playoffs.
Holl just is not physical enough; the other d aren’t particularly either but they bring other skills. I think someone like Mayfield (and who knows if he’d even be available) can bring what Holl does but with a physical edge. Playoffs are a war of attrition and we need some players that will dole out damage
