Description
Yesterday, Frank Seravalli ranked his top 5 teams he thought would be most in on Horvat

1. Boston Bruins
2. Colorado Avalanche
3. Carolina Hurricanes
4. Minnesota Wild
5. Washington Capitals

The only question is, what are these teams going to give up for Bo?

Interested in seeing what kind of offers people think would be on the table. List both rental, and with extension (let’s assume 7-8/$8)

Boston does not need a center this year and can’t sign both Pasta and Bo next year. He can think it all he wants but it makes little sense.

The next 3 make more sense. I could see a Bo - Dumba + move very easily.

Conundrum - Canes don’t pay top dollar rental costs, and they also don’t hand out long term extensions to players approaching 30. The Canes would have to have the Canucks want a rental offer, and then they’d have to change their organizational approach on rentals.

I’d say the Canes would pay a 1st + non-top prospect (someone like Suzuki) for a pure rental.

I’m not even going to offer a extension version, don’t think Bo would sign a shorter term team friendly deal with the Canes.

Not a single one of those teams can afford to give Bo Horvat 8x8 most are already cap strapped. So he's basically rentals to all 5 teams.

Boston- Boston can't afford both Pastrnak and Horvat who'll cost at least $20,000,000 combined if not more Pastrnak $12,000,000 per and Horvat $8,000,000 to $8,500,00 per.

Colorado- Horvat is a pure rental in Colorado, they just don't have the money to sign him long term for the AAV he'll want.

Carolina- he'd be a pure rental Don Waddell isn't paying Horvat Aho money or more plus Aho 1C and Necas 2C Waddell isn't paying Horvat big money to play 3C.

Minnesota- Does this really have to be explained, obviously Minnesota is anchored with both Parise and Suter buy outs. So they don't have the financial means to sign him long term with the kind of money he's going to command.

Washington- Basically the same situation 100% pure rental with both Backstrom and Wilson returning they will be cap strapped this summer.

Another team that makes way more sense is Seattle, With Horvat, Beniers and Wright down the middle Seattle would have a pretty formidable Center core plus they have the financial means to sign him. If he was willing to sign there.

I don't see BG trading for Bo he has been unwilling to part with his 1st rounders and there is no way the Wild can re-sign Bo to an extension. Personally I would love to have Horvat but its just not a good idea to give up the assets needed for a rental when there is no way to re-sign him. If I'm BG I stay the course and build through the draft and wait till the major portion of the buyout pain is done then pull the trigger on some free agents or trades for UFA's.

I think it’s more likely for the Canucks to get a blue chip prospect or a very good young roster player for Horvat instead of a pick. Alvin has said numerous times that they value players over picks in their retool so I could see Horvat for Will Borgen + being on the table.

What if Horvat is also a massive Star Wars fan and has a wicked sweet figure collection that he'd bring with him? Might be tempting to BG

I don't get the Caps connection. Their current center depth is is Kuz-Strome-Backstrom-Dowd with Eller, McMichael, Protas, and maybe even Lapierre able to play center.

-Boston really doesn't have the assets to get him, in my eyes. If they give up their 1st this year and Fabian Lysell, that means they don't pick til somewhere in the late 80s/early 90s in this year's draft, plus they've just sent away their #1 prospect. They might be able to figure out a way to keep both Horvat & Pasta this summer, but do they really need to add Horvat to that lineup? And that's before you get to the idea that Lysell & this year's 1st is an offer that is pretty easily beaten by other suitors for Horvat.

-Colorado makes even less sense than Boston. They actually have a worse prospect pipeline, and they've already sent away their 2nd & 3rd round picks in the next two drafts. If they give up their 1st this year, they don't make a pick until the 5th round; they also only really have Oskar Olausson and Sean Behrens as prospects that you could call anything more than "depth guys" - and not only do they have limited assets to pursue the trade, they also only have about $12M in cap space this summer with a bunch of guys to replace (Compher/Rodrigues/Helm/Cogliano/Johnson) or re-sign (Byram/Newhook). The fit just isn't there.

-The Hurricanes make more sense than the other two, but the last time Don Waddell traded a 1st for a deadline rental, he was acquiring Keith Tkachuk. Not saying it won't happen, but if it does it'll be a more creative deal (and will involve Carolina sending cap back to make this year's cap work.) I can see this more than the other because the Canes DO have the cap to take on an extended Horvat - they're clearing $13M between Pacioretty & Staal's deals expiring this summer, they can surely give Horvat $8M and use the $5M on another top-6 winger and not miss a step.

-The Wild have done an amazing job of clearing cap this year, and the fact that they can take on Horvat's full cap hit at the deadline will lower the acquisition cost for them. But the cap hell they're going to be in with the buyouts over the next couple seasons makes them extremely unlikely to extend Horvat at $8M+ - so they're not going to value him any higher than a guy that they're gonna get 20-35 games out of.

-The Caps probably make the most sense out of this bunch - they have the cap space this year (assuming they keep Connor Brown & John Carlson LTIRed til the playoffs), and they've got the cap space and roster spots next season. I think they might offer a 1st/2nd/Vincent Iorio package to take Horvat in - maybe a little more, but they're another team that's very old and shouldn't be mortgaging their entire future for a guy. They're gonna need young bodies on ELCs if they're adding Horvat at $8Mish to Ovi/Backstrom/Wilson/Carlson.

Borgen is already 26 (so not very young) and is playing third pair minutes (so not very good either). I'm sure the Canucks would have interest in him being in the package, but I don't see any universe where he's the centerpiece of the package.

Seravalli is speaking out of both sides of his mouth. One article he will say that avs arent asset rich and probably cant afford Horvat so Toews makes the most sense, then the next day he has them listed as 2nd on most in on him?

Hes just throwing things at the wall right now educated guess speculation. Dont doubt the avs are doing their due diligence checking in on horvat but thats one thing Ive noticed about Seravalli since he moved on from TSN, hes been getting a little click baity with his insider stuff

No, they aren't guaranteed to cost at least $20M and there's a thing called trading players to make cap space.

Would love to add Bo for a deep run. He was a guy I was hoping would magically fall to Boston in his draft year, but idk where he fits on the current roster. Right now down the middle Boston sits Bergeron, Krejci, Coyle, Nosek. Bo isn't playing 4C and Boston seems to be unwilling to move Coyle to RW. Obviously neither Bergeron or Krejci are going to move to the wing, so that means Bo will likely need to move to RW. Likely it would be 3RW with Hall & Coyle.

As for what Boston could offer? Its nothing that likely blows Vancouver away. Vancouver would need to likely take back equal cap or retain on Horvat to make something work. I don't see Boston subtracting from their main roster and I'd think Lysell and Lohrei still remain non-starters for the Bruins (like last year).

Every site i've seen has said that Pastrnak's camp is seeking $12,000,000 per and Horvat is looking at between $8,500,000 to $9,000,000 so it's more like $21,000,000 combined.

Then you should stop going on those "sites". There hasn't been any credible source that's reported anything on Pastrnak camp's ask.

It's a known fact that Pastrnak is seeking Panarin money. So that's basically $11,643,000 per So $12,000,000 per is very realistic.

Pasta shouldn't get Panarin(sign date cap %) money which is 11.9m in '23-'24 dollars. I think 11m for Pasta would be good for both parties, but can see him getting 12m. That 4.5m in bonus carry over will make it tough to extend Horvat or sign any big name ufa's aside from Pasta/Bergy. If Pasta does take 11m then that leaves 11m to sign Bergy, Krejci, Sway and an entire bottom 6. Do-able, but its toight

Don't know how Washington does it unless Backstrom is done after this year. As a rental, I guess they give you a giroux type package of 23 1st + McMichael + Eller for Horvat 50% retained but there are better fits for them for that price

Rental, the Avs simply shouldn't touch it. They'd have to give up way more than they can afford to meet Vancouver's demands. IF the Avs could re-sign Horvat (which they realistically can't, it's been tried a few times now as an exercise on here) then I'd value him at one of Newhook (the logical choice as there would be less need for him if Horvat becomes the 2C), Behrens or Olausson plus a 1st, though probably the '24 rather than '23.

Given how thin the Avs talent pool is and how much better they need it to be combined with their lackluster play lately, there is no reason whatsoever for them to be in on Horvat at all. Like, not even a little. That list is all about creating hype and clicks and should not be taken to be a reflection of reality.

It seems strange that Washington would be considering Horvat, given the cap situation after this year and the abundant center depth with Kuznetsov (7.8 next year), Strome (RFA), Backstrom (9.2 next year), Eller (UFA), and Dowd (1.3 next year) already in the NHL, with Lapierre (ELC) and McMichael (ELC) coming up next year. Maybe the team would consider Horvat as a rental but even then, Washington is already having to shift centers to wing and adding Horvat would make that an even larger stackup. I think Washington looks at an RD before another center.
